Going Forged Question

Hey guys, you may or may not know im picking up a 99 GT with a V2 blower on it. Well the engine is apart and has to be rebuilt, so im going to go with forged internals. I can get a good deal on a crank, rods, and pistons out of an 03 cobra with only 11k miles on the car. My question to you guys is what else will i need? So far i know of head studs and gaskets. White Venom has been helping me out with this since he lives close to me, just wanted to make sure we got everything covered! Thanks guys!

Is the cobra crank 6 or 8 bolt? If 8 bolt, you'll have to accomodate for that.

Can you get the full shortblock? the cobra motor has 4 bolt mains instead of just 2?

I bought an MMR shortblock! you should go to a better forged rotating assembly that handles more power! or at least just do good rods+pistons and run stock crank if your going the cheap route! Stock crank is good for sigificant power

while you're rebuilding it, I'd go ahead and get a better oil pump. Nothing like a little extra insurance for those new guts.

Im not sure if it was a 6 or 8 bolt..I called the guy and he wasnt sure, he said he knows nothing about cars and is having a "race motor" put in it in the shop lol. I didnt get into asking him questions really since he didnt know about anything. If it is an 8 bolt, what are the accommodations i would have to make?

That was another option..how much did you pay for that if you dont mind me asking? I was thinking about just buying the forged rotating assembly maybe

i would go with the 03 cobra rotator. its plenty strong for what that vortech can put out. i would go with total seal ap ss rings. clevite tri metal bearings, arp hardwear every where. if your looking to make real high hp (over 700) i would swap the pistons. also i would send the pistons out to get notched. your also going to need a 8 bolt fly wheel

yeah not looking to make over 700 i doubt..stal, i thought that with it being a 99 GT it had a windsor motor in it, which came stock with an 8 bolt flywheel..as opposed to the later romeo engines that came with a 6 bolt? is that wrong?

Also, is $650 a decent deal for the crank, rods, and pistons out of an 03 cobra with 11k original miles

that is a good deal. your stock flywheel will work as well. only think i can see being an issue is you have a windsor block and im not 100% sure about the fitment of the crank. i am almost sure it will drop into that block but someone else may be able to answer that better. deff go with the cobra setup, you will be happy with it. i would get the crank, and block machined and balanced and its good to go

Thanks man. I'll be sure to do that, I have a guy that will machine and hone the block and balance everything. If anyone can confirm that the crank will drop into my windsor please let me know.

the only big diff between the mmr 900 and the stock 03-04 cobra rotating assemblys are the pistons. they use the same rods and crank. the cobra pistons are not quite as strong as the manley 4340 forged pistons. most cobra guys only swap pistons if they are looking to make anything under 1000 hp. hell i have seen stock cobra motors push 800+ with turbo setups.

im almost 100% sure it will drop in, the only thing that cant be miss matched is if you use a windsor crank you cant use romeo rods and vic versa. other than that i belive the crank, pistons, and rods should drop in and go in a windsor.

x2. Most guys that do fuck there termi pistons up do it with very agressive tunes or doing high speed runs with prolonged boost. Ive seen guys melt piston #7 or 8 going 145mph. Shit happens. they are a good piston and will do good with boost.

I appreciate this thread, been pondering grabbing a termi rotating assembly but never knew the details. I could use the rods and pistons on my romeos stock crank to keep my flywheel? Reason I ask is I would like to push past the 400 mark in the future without blowing up my new engine. Wouldn't push too much power, I would be happy with 500 to the wheel. This is why I'm looking for termi parts and not crazy expensive forged stuff or a built shortblock.

dont worry about the crank if you only want 500. The stock crank will be fine. Just do the rods/pistons and hone the block.

damage to 7 8 cylander comes from the coolant passage being blocked on the rear driver side head. most do a coolant mod to fix the problem. gt's also have this problem but not as bad. on my tfs manifold it came with a bung on the back of the manifold that i tied into my heater core to allow the back cylanders keep cool. termi pistons are the weak point in cobra motors but they will still support 700+ rwhp as long as they stay nice and cool. iat's are real important.

whats a usual estimate that machine shops will charge to put in different rods, pistons, and to hone your block? And does the crank have to be balanced with the new rods and pistons. Im askin bc i have no Idea on the cost and i was also planning on pushing no more than 500rwhp later down the road.
