driveline issues

So the whole transmission/driveshaft/differential is making me not like my car and get rid of it for a bimmer again.

When i push the clutch in ALL the way and put the car into gear, it will clunk into gear a lot of the time. it is not coming from the transmission, but from the rear end. What can be causing this? When the clutch is fully disengaged what can cause this to happen? Also, when i had the car up in the air not that long ago, if i turned on of the rear wheels, there was a lot of slack before the other would start turning. Does this mean that my rear end is shot?

Oh yeah, and my throwout bearing from the new clutch i put in only a few thousand miles ago has gone bad already...

(I traded a bimmer for my mustang too) lol

Check the U-joints. You could have excessive backlash in the rear gears. But check the u-joints first.

Although this still doenst fix why it clucks when the clutch is all of the way in an you shift into gear. Check your clutch cable adjustmant. Pull up on the clutch pedal to tighten it up a little.

I have a similar issue at the moment and I suspect it is u joints. Willy Mo makes a good point. Start there first. They are cheap and new ones couldnt hurt.

On a side note, every time I drive a Bimmer I want to buy one.

I have back lash from the rear end as well. Have replaced the drive shaft with an aluminum one and changed the diff fluid. The fluid change helped the grinding popping noise from the diff when making swooping turns. But still get a whip from the rear.

My guess is the u joints as well. Anyone know where the best ones are for a decent price? I would rather order american made quality parts versus getting cheap chinese ones from the auto part store?

Out of curiosity, why did you trade your bimmer for the mustang? i only did got the mustang because BMW NA made me really unhappy since my subframe fell out on my 2000 328ci. If i could get my old '92 325is back i would do it in a heart beat...

sometimes i wonder myself lol. I had a 98' 328is. Silver with black leather interior. Best handleing car iver ever rode in, none the less drove. It was pretty quick for what it was, but best 1/4 pass was high 14's. I am a ford/mustang guy at heart and wanted a mustang more at the time. But damn do i wish i still had that car!

Does it clunk harder when your going into 1st gear while rolling? If I'm rolling to fast and try to put it in 1st my car clunks from the rear with the clutch pushed in.

it does it when im rolling or not. i do feel a decent amount of what feels like the driveshaft picking up slack when i let the clutch out when changing gears. This sounds like u joints i think.

Which clutch did you install? Sometimes the TOB goes prematurely because the clutch isn't adjusted properly. Mine went prematurely because I had some bent fingers that the TOB was riding on. The TOB should not be touching the diaghram when the clutch is released.
