Differential bearing grease?

I recently changed my entire rear end to 31 spline axles and all, but now i am getting some weird noise from the rear end. I am pretty sure it is the carrier bearings and want to know if the carrier bearings should be greased prior to installing and, if they do, what kind of grease should i use? I put some synthetic grease on the bearings prior to installing them, but I think i used the wrong grease. Any help is appreciated.

don't worry about the grease, the diff fluid will keep everything lubed up. the noise you hear.. is it a whining noise? if so it will be your gears making the noise, that means your back lash is off. what brand of gears?

FRPP gears. I did not remove the pinion gear as I already had 373s installed. I just removed the carrier, swapped the ring gear, put the 31 spline axles in and shimed the new carrier the same as the 28 spline one. I used 75-140 diff fluid (debatable whether or not i should have used use 75-90). It's kind of a weird noise. Kind of a whine but nut really. I did not check the backlash cause I did not remove the pinion gear.

hmmm... my guess is the new carrier is slightly different size than the other one and might need more shims added to compensate.

Even though you didnt change take the pinion out, you changed the carrier that the ring get was on when it was initially set up so you have to go back and redo everything as far as back lash and tooth patterns on the gears.

+1
Not checking your backlash after you put it all back together is just asking for problems.

Ahhh.. Will do. I will open her back up and check the tooth pattern with some marking compound. Any better way to check the back lash without a dial caliper?? They are about $100 bucks for a one time use.....

You cannot mix and match ring and pinion gears without taking a gamble that it might be (probably will be) noisy, even if they are from the same manufacturer and machined one after the other. The final machining process is to create a "lapped" fit, which consists of mounting and running the gears on a specialised machine that uses abrasive lubricant to perfectly mate the gearset.

I am not mix matching ring and pinions. I Only upgraded to 31 spline axles. 3.73 ring and pinion are staying in the rear end just on a different carrier.

I bought one at harbor freight for like 8$ back when I needed one.

If you have a Oreillys nearby they should be able to rent you one for free as well.

It can be done by feel if you set up gears regularly but otherwise I'd stick to a dial gauge.

I misunderstood, sorry 'bout that--in that case then check the backlash as others have suggested, there should not be any other possibility for mis-alignment...

No problem. Thanks for the heads up though. Anyone know what kind of marking compound I should use on the gears when checking alignment? I used a cheap crappy one that came with the bearing kit.

As much as it pains me to say this, try a GM dealer--p/n 1052351 Gear Marking Compound.

For some reason they tend to keep it in stock, while Ford dealers do not (Ford's is Motorcraft p/n XG-14)...
