just some minor internal diffrences.
the main thing is you need more than the tranny, you need to swap computers as well & the 98 is a 1 year deal as far as computers.

i cant just do a typical tranny swap, and switch computers with the person, and call it a day?

yes you can, but it will need to be from another 98.
96'-97' & 99'-04' wouln't work, their computers are diffrent, 98' was a 1 year only deal.

This is as far as many things go with the 98. The fuel tank/pick up is a 98' only thing as well
