Question

Taller tire?

OK I have 3.73's and I love them except for one simple thing. Traction. My current tire setup consists of 255/45/17 Nitto 555's. I plan on running 275's on the rear next time but I am afraid that still will not be enough. I enjoy running from stoplight to stoplight and hope maybe a taller tire will help. In hind sight I wish I had gotten 3.55's but figured if I ever went to the track with DR's 3.73's would benefit me much more.
So here is my question. If I went to a 275/50/17 (if I can get this of course) how far off would my speedo be and how would it change my actual rear end ratio?

the big problem you'll have there is extremely limited tire choice & the 28" tire height.

Get yourself a set of 15" wheels and run a tire that is 25.6" diameter and will have zero speedometer accuracy issues, provided that this is what you run now and have calibrated it already. If not, then get a tuner and do it up, homie

A 28" tall tire is freakin' big and all but guarantee you will rub somewhere, so prepare to roll some fenders if you do.

I've looked it up and supposedly getting a wider tire changes your speeds as well. A 275 sized tire with a height of 50 bumps 1st gear up almost 3mph. That may not sound like much but 1st being bumped up that much should help with traction a good bit.

and @ jazzer. Eh I just want to be able to floor my car in 1st again. It always spins a little bit. When I had 3.27's I could dead hook in first. I don't think LCA's are going to help too much either. If I can dead hook in first again I will be happy.

A wider tire, in and of itself, will not effect the speedometer accuracy..... only the diameter. From personal experience, I found that a 1" taller tire will create a speed of approx. 5 mph slow reading at 70 mph.

There are scientific ways to calculate this, but just to give you an idea.

your problem isn't as much tire size as it is tire choice. something along the lines of a drag radial in 275/40-17 on a 9" wheel or better yet a 315/35-17 on a 10.5 might be more suitable.

there will come a point where nothing will help though, it's tough to hook a car up on the street.

+1 a wider tire will not affect anything as long as the side wall is the same. a 245/45, 275/40, and 315/35 all have the same sidewall, 110 mm.

I use the 1010 tire calculator to look at differences.

op you just need new or better tires, you dont make the power to require much more than a good set of 245/45/17 dr's. getting wider heavier wheels will slow you down.

But as far as street tires go 555's are some of the best. I could pay a little more and some 555R's unless someone has a better tire in mind?

I think you just need to look at different tires...

I run 4.10's with a 28" tire, and it took enough gear out to where I'm going to swap to 4.30's to get some of it back. With the 4.10's and 28" tire, the car isn't near as fast as it was with 26" tires off the bottle, but the increased sidewall gave me a ton more traction, so 4.30's it is.

You might as well go back to running stock 3.27 gears if you put 28" tires on a 3.73 car.

Didn't know it affected them that much. Oh well I have noticed today since it is warmer I hooked up just fine on the street. Maybe in the spring I can hook up every time. I know the colder temperature can affect traction.
