odometer reading

I have a buddy who bought a '03 GT with a blown motor... he needs to get the mileage off the odometer but can't, he said his wire harness is not hooked up to his ECU. he hooks up the battery but all that appers is (----------). Is the mileage stored on the cluster or the ECU?

It's in the cluster--should be displayed with the key on/engine off (KOEO)...

He turned it on and all that is reading is a bunch of dashes where the mileage should be (----------)

Yes you said that, I related what it is supposed to do...

Obviously there something is wrong. The cluster does have to be connected to a properly operating PCM for the SCP (Serial Communications Protocol, aka J1850 OBD2 bus) to fire things off--if the PCM is bad or not properly connected then the cluster may not behave as it is supposed to.

I have never seen this, or attempted to create the situation, so I cannot offer much more as to exactly how it would all behave...
