Can Anyone Supply Info on Actual Flywheel Weight?

It's time to do a clutch swap (slipping). You can read stats of my car in my sig. I am thinking of going with the Spec Stage 2; feel free to weigh in on that.

BUT the main purpose of the thread is to find weights and opinions of actual flywheels for my 00 GT or other relevant years. I have not seen any good info after several our of cruising the forum, others, and google.

How much does the stock flywheel weight? How much does the fidanza alum weight? What about the spec steel and alum flywheels? ANY INFO on quality, etc.?

alot more than an aluminum one. a lot of people like the ligher aluminum ones cause it reduces rotational mass and adds a little pep to the car. im not a fan of aluminum wheels cause they dont carry momentum very well on the track, but with a wot shift box i bet its a good combo with an aluminum wheel

i think the stock weighs around 25lbs and i know there's different weights to the fidanza but i think the alum is 8lbs.

25-26lbs for stocker. aftermarkets are between 11-16lbs generally. if you arent pushing 400+ or always in high rpm's, then just keep a stock type flywheel.

I of course no the reasoning behind a lightened flywheel.

I have read 25lbs for the stocker myself. I don't think any lightened mustang flywheel weighs 8lbs. Prob. 12 - 13 at the minimum.

I weighed the OEM flywheel from my '03 GT, 26lb 3oz. I replaced it with a Ralco RZ Chromoly flywheel that weighs 16lb 9oz. The Ralco flywheels are not cheap ($244), however they are things of beauty all CNC machined from one-piece of 4140 Chromoly , precision balanced, and meeting SFI 1.1 specs.

They are tested to 12k rpm...

That's not bad. The spec alum one is ~$300, and the fidanza is ~$350.

I called spec and fidanza today.

Fidanza said their flywheel is 12.85 lbs; that's accurate enough to sound legit. The friction surface is replaceable, and there are no weights (I often read weight and balance horror stories) with respect to mod motors.

Spec said theirs is 14 lbs shipping weight, and the guy thinks it weight 1-2lbs less than that. I am thinking it probably weighs 13.5-14lbs.

I think I am going to use fidanza as I have heard good things with respect to lots of people I know first hand on various other rides. Seems that their products are consistently good.

Is your car a DD or track only ride?

IMHO if track only then the AL wheel with the replaceable friction surface is the way to go, however if you drive it daily you may not like the "grabiness" and need to "drive it like you just stole it" feel of an AL flywheel with a steel/iron insert--and balance is an issue with all of them after you wear through the first insert--which was surfaced in place when originally manufactured. At each insert replacement you will nned pull the f/w and have it trued.

I am sure many will argue these points, however I have "been there and done that" once or twice (a man is supposed to learn from his mistakes) over the last 40+ years--which is why I choose the Ralco billet alloy steel unit for my DD...

I had a heavily cammed turbo fwd sr20 with an 8lb flywheel. And it was sort of a handful to drive, especially when cold and from a start (more so when cold). I think the problem was most the cams, but the flywheel made it difficult as well. Honestly, it was not that bad, and if I still had the car, I would drive it all the time.

I DD the mustang as much as I can. But with two cars (the other one a tundra), I often go with the tundra when I know traffic will be especially bad or it's going to rain for sure. I like the driveability of the mustang as it sits, but I know I will regret not trying a lighter flywheel when everything is apart anyway. My only concern is that I know quicker shifts or better rev matching (throttle blip) is needed with the lighter flywheel, but T45s don't shift very quickly.

I am confident that I can live with whatever it will be like. I also used my old 8lb flywheel on a different car through two clutches without issue. I am still going to pull this whole thing apart this weekend, see what's in there, and make a final decision.

BTW, I like that chromoly unit, but the wear surface won't' last as long as an alum with an iron insert. So I have mixed feelings about it. What experience has you had with it?

I disagree, Chromoly has at least the same, arguably higher, abrasion/wear resistance than iron--and even if it didn't I would not use an "insert" f/w on a DD; as I said above I have been there and done that, after the first insert wears things go downhill. Heat transfer between the insert and the f/w, and warping, is a big issue as I have never seen a new insert that "fit like a glove".

A good machine shop can make 'em fit properly--but that does add $$$.

Again, none of this matters on a track car where getting to the traps ASAP trumps all other considerations--but for a true DD that hits more than 8k to 10k/year think about it...
