you dont want to remove the metal bracing of the dash unless you are going to run a cage

It would be fairly simple to make, I would think. I don't have the fabrication ability quite yet, so I bought one.

Ain't that the truth. Most of the weight in the dash is from the support to hold the steering column up, which also doubles as a heat duct. So unless you're deleting the heat and air and putting in a cage. Also, think about the wiring involved. If you've never seen how much wiring there is in a stock column just to run the Multi-Function switch, you'd change your mind if it's a street car and you need fully functional headlights, turn signals and wipers.

And then there's the safety factor, without a cage, you just put a spear in front of you with no breakaway capability.
