Extreme Weight Loss... Part 1

So.... my MAC Pro Dumps will be here any day now, and I've gotten a V6 rear bumper cover and it's at the paintshop being repainted.

So, I figured while I had the rear bumper cover off, I might as well go with the lightweight rear bumper support, which is supposed to save 22lbs, while keeping some support for the bumper cover.

I've also ordered a set of Aluminum panels for the trunk floor, just waiting on them to be completed, I was told 2-3 weeks on those. Once they're here, we're going to cut out the majority of the floor of the trunk, brace it up a bit, and then install the new aluminum trunk floor. I have no idea how much weight that will take off the car, but I'm guessing it'll be significant. I'm not sure how much structure will be harmed by removing the trunk floor, but if it's too much, I will probably add a rear shock tower brace if needed.

I'm also ordering an aluminum rear seat delete and side panel kit soon also. I have no idea how much that'll save, but we'll see.

That's cool.

I guess you've already taken all the weight off the front of the car.
That's where I would start.

I've got a little more to do on the front, I've still got to pull my bumper cover and put the lightweight bumper support in there, and pull the radiator part left from the air conditioning, and add a lightweight fiberglass hood and that's about all I can do.

Honestly I would keep the trunk as is, as it seems like alot of work for very little gain, my advice would be concentrate the time and money on getting weight off of the front half of the car !

The front of the car is about as empty as I can get it without deleting my power brakes. I do have to add the lightweight bumper bar, but that's about all that's left.

You're joking right? Mine hasn't had a spare in it in years. Now I'm getting rid of the entire spare tire well completely.

Yah, I went with the aluminum 3V motor with AC delete, Griggs tubular K/A arms, my own carbon fiber RSD, and removed everything from the trunk. Unless you are dead set on that aluminum look, I can make you a PVC foam composite one that would weigh about the same fpr $200 shipped. Well unless you wanted a logo or something cutt out but I dont think its the case here. pics of my work in my garage.

is the aluminum lighter than the plexi-glass or whatever used on rearseatdelete.com and other sites?

they would be about the same weigt as aluminum but would not hold up. The reason I started making them is because the other people who make them do so out off cheap cardboard crap and charge over $100 for it. the one I got a long time ago started to sag and warp under its own weight and started to look like crap. There are many options though like the really light weight composite materials and MDF I use. The MDF weighs about 15-20 lbs less than the rear seat but more than the composite by about 10 lbs. Either one comes out in less than a min for track days though

The trunk panels arrived today. They look shiny in these pictures, but it's just the protective coating over the aluminum to protect it until they're installed. Under it, they're a nice matte black and scratch free.

Anyone have a plasma cutter I can borrow? That would make this process a lot easier, that's for sure.........lol

Yeah, I don't think it'll be too much of a problem to get there with my aluminum block and tubular K-Member.

I dropped my V6 rear bumper cover off at the paint shop today, and since it's a favor, it may take a couple weeks to a month to get back, so that gives me time to get the lightweight support before it's ready.
