No Pressure after Oil Change

Over the years I have done hundreds of oil changes on dozens of cars that I've owned. Today, changing the oil after putting in Mobile 1 oil and a new Mobile 1 filter I had no oil pressure whatsoever. No leaks. Dipstick said plently of oil. I put the odometer in test mode, no oil pressure. I put the old oil filter back on and oil pressure came back.

Just curious, have any of you gotten a bad filter before?

I've never gotten one in a car (knock on wood ) but I see it all the time on Cummins ISX motors in heavy trucks.

either the new filter isnt the right one (just because u buy it new doesnt mean its not bad) or two orings are installed on the new filter...check the filter

Double stacking o-rings will cause it to leak like crazy when the car is turned on.

It does if the new filter is clogged and not letting oil through.

As I said, in the hundreds of oil changes I've done, I've never had that happen before. By the way, they gave me a refund on the oil filter.

By the way, the O-rings were not double stacked, and there were no leaks. Just no flow through the filter.

Yes. Mobile 1 oil and filters are exceptionally good products. I seem to have got the one in a million bad filter. The moral of this story is "if you suspect something is wrong, don't run you motor." Even if you put excellent products in it.

Hell, my first thought was I didn't put the plug back in the oil pan. (It's happend before. I'm old. Don't ask me about this.)

I think a lot of people have done it once. When I was in middle school and just learned to change my oil, I did it. You'll do it once and [hopefully] never do it again.

I think you ment 5 quarts, not 5 gallons.

I'm having a problem with my care after changing oil, too. Also used a Mobil1 filter....But I also used fi cleaner and engine cleaner, so....I doubt its related. Just won't start for shit when its cold, have to floor the gas and let it sputter rpms until it finally forces through. I'm thinking the cleaners clogged something up with gunk old oil. Not on a Mustang, though, so completely unrelated here. Didn't mean to hijack. Lol

Update: I went out to start the car last night and no oil pressure again. It has to be coincidence and unrelated to changing the oil.

I don't know about these motors but the oil pressure sending gauge on my jeep is right next to the oil filter, if this is the case in our mustang motors then it is likely you wacked it by accident, have a loose connection etc. Are you running a separate oil pressure gauge or just going by what the one on the dash says? The stocker isn't much to pay mind to.

I have a 2000GT also doing the same thing. I can start it up and it has pressure and then drops. The car sounds and seems to run just fine with no knock or any issues... After I rev it up a little or it warms up it appears to get full pressure. Im assuming it is a sensor... or the oil pump is starting to go out..

Please help me.. i will be pulling this thing out soon.

Update: After two trips to the parts store I've got oil pressure again. Evidently Ford made a mid-year change. My 2000 GT has a 2001 Oil Pressure Switch. I guess I gave Mobile 1 a bad rep when it wasn't necessary. I wonder what the odds are of the switch going out during an oil change?

Perfectcircle: Yes, the switch is located next to the oil filter and is easy to change. And, you are correct about the stock gauge. It doesn't really measure oil pressure. Its basically an idiot light with a needle. Above 6 psi it will read the middle of the gauge. Below 6 psi it reads zero.

gt andy: It is most likely your switch. It costs $40 at Ford and $9 at Autozone.
