04 GT 6 quarts of oil and dipstick reads below minimum

Like the title says, i got my oil changed with a new filter and saw the mechanic put 6 quarts of the oil i bought in my car, i checked the dipstick and it was just a tad below minimum. he explained that i might just have to drive around, and since..my oil level is still a tad below minimum. 3 months ago the same amount of oil brought it just a tad over max.

What has happened to my engine?

Blue smoke, you're burning it

then obviously look for leaks. They make a dye you can put in the oil and use a black light to see leaks.

If you are 100% certain 6 qts were loaded, then don't worry about it--you are obsessing over something that is not that critical.

As others have said the manner in which, and timing of when, you check the oil level can greatly impact the dipstick readings--with the most important piece being that the engine needs to sit for a bit to make sure the oil has drained back to the sump, and that you consistently check the level under the same conditions.

Here's is a Ford TSB regarding oil levels that explains how to properly check and interpret the level.

dude that thing holds like 5.2 or something, if you over fill it thats bad. and yeah you have to let the oil cycle down to the pan, its thick as fuck too when its cold.

Six quarts is the recommended fill for all 4.6L Mustangs. In late 2001 an independent test found that with only 5.0 qts there was a possibility of oil starvation during aggressive, high-G, cornering.

Ford responded to this by changing the recommended fill and the dipsticks--that's all; check out the owners manuals here and you will see the altered spec.

Yes, the flow of oil back to th pan is the problem.\
