Hey Baker & Casper......... got a trans question for ya.

If my memory serves me right one of you guys had a shifting issue with your trans. If I'm right, what was the reason? I am now looking at possibly taking the trans out to get it looked at because I can't get the stupid thing to do anything. Your insight is appreciated.

What is your trans doing? Is it shifting at all? IS it attempting to move? What's the deal?

yeah automatic. I have a built 4r70w and before the trans swap it shifted fine when in the other guys car. we swapped everything that could possibly have anything to do with the electronics and all. I don't have any idea.

You still haven't really said what it is doing. At this point, I am guessing that you start the car, then try to shift into R or D and it does nothing? Give us a complete break down of the situation please

The stupid thing goes into gear and you can drive it but it just don't want to shift. It's got a 3500 stall and has been J-modded ect. ect..... It will go into drive and reverse but when driving it's like it's stuck in 1st gear. It's just refusing to shift. I have went through all my wiring and cant find a reason that way.

We swapped out computers, speedo cluster, all cables and harness, steering column and all to make it as seemless as possible to make the swap work with the car and the pats and all still work good. I don't know what else it could be and am at this moment stumped.

sorry I didn't give more information. I just remember that Casper or Baker one had a simular issue and they finally found it. Thanks guys.

sounds like the accumalator spring.

Have you had the valve body off/down of it?

no I havn't taken the pan off yet. Whats wierd is that the trans shifted fine right before I took it out. I will probably get the car back over to my fathers and put it back on the lift to figure it out. where is the spring located? If you know of any exploded view pics or could give me an idea, that would be very helpful.

It sucks too that I get $20k for my income taxes but I have to wait to get it because it's an adoption credit, so I would just take some money and have someone fix the stupid thing. I am getting tired of working on it.

****EDIT**** Looking at the picture, its circled. Its held in by a c clip. Careful, its in there with a lot of pressure. You need to push up on it before you remove the c clip. I just put an 1/2 wrench extension on a jack, jack the jack up until the extension is pushing the unit off the c clip. Then slowly let the jack down.

Luckily the spring is like 20 bucks if its bad. Then just reverse the above to install it and thats it. Really simpler than it sounds.

Let me look for a diagram

I will check it probably tomorrow. It's just frustrating. Hey, I would rather you edit and let me know. great pic by the way. Do you think that the spring would be broken or just weak? what have you seen? Thanks again.

ive seen both, broken and just soft. The one that was soft, I didnt notice the difference until they were next to each other and could feel the difference in tension. Any trans shop in your local area should have these parts, very common failure point in these trans, along with the 2-3 spring actually breaking

actually the 2-3 should be held in with the c clip, the 1-2 just pushes up

so this will cause the trans not to shift? I wish I understood more on these trannies. I can work on the 5-speeds all day long but my knowlege on the auto's is slim. Maybe I should just go ahead and buy them both and replace them anyways. What do I ask for as a name so that the transmission shop knows what to get? My luck I would get some dumb hillbilly that wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about.

yeah, soft or broken spring can cause, delayed shifts, no shifts, hard or soft shifts. Springs go out and its game on

gotta drop the valve body too, its a bunch of 8mm bolts all over/around/through the valve body.

Dont know what you have for fluid catching, but a tip that makes it easier. Go get a big thin cookie sheet, punch a hole in the middle, then set that over your oil catch can. Gives you a larger area of catching. Fluid kind of comes out quickly and from all over and just makes everything easier
