If the Camaro/ Firebird design had more appeal to the common folk not interested in performance, it would have survived. The argument that the Mustang is better because of the fact that it outsold the Camaro is lame.
Ford put a package together that appealed to such a vast aray of people it was/is a success. You can get a mustang from an auto V6 to a manual s/c cobra and almost anything in between. When you appeal to a mass market, thats a success. The fbody was/is almost a niche car. You wanted to go fast and didnt care about the rest of the car around it.

Although you think if GM was so smart and created the LSX line of engines they could build a better auto trans and use a rear end thats as strong as a parapalegic weight lifter.

So when GM released the 5th gen Fbody, what did they cater to? Old people, tons of heavy options, an IRS which is just as shitty as the old 7.5 10 bolt the 4th gen had.

A lot of those sales are fleet rental cars and not performance enthusiasts. My point, which may not have been very clear, was merely that it was not because the Mustang was a better performing car that it beat the Camaro in sales. Correlation =/= causation. I am only pointing out that the sales numbers and the reason for its success likely had nothing to do with the performance of either car and to suggest otherwise is illogical. You're absolutely right that sales numbers are sales numbers. Sales numbers are not, however, indicative of how good a car is over another car at anything other than being sold. Otherwise we would have to concede to some really stupid correlative relationships (Ford GT sold less than the Honda Civic, so the Civic is a better car?).
again, when two cars that have gone head to head since 1967, sales numbers are one of the TOP reasons/ways to judge success. Its not like these cars are in two classes of cars, they have and will and do go head to head every time the cars are brought up.

NMRA, the car has its own racing league. The lsx motors just got their own racing series a few yrs ago. Not the camaro, not the firebird, the engine.........

Cost had alot to do with it also. The mustang offered better styling.build quality at a cheaper price. the v6 mustang was the staple of the sales #'s. but when it comes to performance chev has the edge imo.

I campained a chev and ford in both the mini-rod and 4x4 class in tractor pulls for years, all built from the ground up by me and the chev alway's out performed the ford (514 vs 468)for the money. i would have to buy alot more expensive parts to keep the ford competive where as the chev, not so much. Hell even the mustang that won pinks all out ran a chev motor

I think thats why the saying "drive a ford race a chev" came from

I was skeptical too. Bought the car (2004 GT with a 5 speed) and fell in love. This car is much more expensive to mod, but in my area, I seem to be the only one running a modded 2v... and actually get the "hey nice car" comment often! I don't know what it is about these New Edge's, but I'm stuck!

To the OP,
I think i can sum all six pages of this thread up in one post.

If you want an ugly ass car that looks like a damn catfish, has a great engine, with a rear end that's about as beefy as a toyota Prius, accompanied by the interior of a Chrysler minivan, then hold onto the Camaro.

If you want a BEAUTIFUL car, with a good engine platform, a decently strong rear end, with comfortable interior, that will earn you respect for building the right way and putting all the bow-tie humpers to shame, get the Mustang. not to mention you'll get more ass than a Walmart toilet seat.

nuff said.
