at your power level, I'd stick with the GT stuff.

you'll pay dearly for both the trans & the ECU & the gains aren't really there from my research.
are they both better (ie. trans & ECU)? yes.
better enough to justify the cost? no.

I'm going to have a lot questions while doing this.
I found a 4r70w out of a 96 gt with low mileage for a good price but I know they have different valve bodies as well as mechanical VSS. Will it still work in my 02'? Should I stick with 99-04 transmission?
My plan is a 3500-3800 stall, shift kit, and trans cooler. I drive my car hard on the street and strip and sick of dealing with clutches.
Stick to an 01-02 4r70w and computer out of a Mustang GT. They aren't hard to find, just stop by your local ford auto recycler. A lot of times you can get a low mileage unit with a warranty for about $300-400. The +01 models have a better valve body and a few upgraded internals such as the hardened intermediate stub shaft which are not present in earlier years which is important for anyone running a power adder. You cannot get a v6 trans either. The internals are pretty much identical, but the case is different and won't bolt up to a 4.6.

Thanks for the help guys. Low mileage units are all in the 500-600 range around here. I'm waiting for one to pop up on c-list, but nothing from 99-04 GTs yet. I almost got a 4r75w from a Mach with 18k on it but someone snagged it before I could make up my mind. It'd be nice to break even after selling off the tr3650 and parts.

OK. I sent them an email with my needs. Do you think they'll have a better pricing than MPS auto salvage?

Also, is it true that a stock torque converter will have a higher stall speed at my power level. My tuner ran a stock converter in his Mach with 540 rwhp and ran deep into the 10s. Is this a option or should I just get a custom one built?

you could get by temporarily with a stock converter, I wouldn't even consider leaving it in there though.
