water temp sending unit

Hi!
Can someone explain where the water temp sending unit is located at on my 2000 supercharged GT? I suspect it's broken since my autometer needle is not moving even if the engine is hot... I tought I found it but a mechanic told me that it was 99% chance it was the wrong sensor I found since it has 2 wires connected. He told me that the sensor just gave the temp to the computer and not to the gauges... He told me to look for a sensor with only 1 wire. I've looked around the engine room, but can't find it

I'll be thankful for any answer that can help me locate it.

You have one in the intake! Ill post the pic! The highlighted part is where the coolant sensor is. I dont know if it is the one for the gauge or not! Hope this helps!

And this is not my picture! It is Caspers! Thanks Casper!

That's the one I thought it was, but a mechanic I know told me it's supposed to just have one wire connected... U don't happen to know how I can send some kind on signal to check if my autometer needle really works?

Ok, thank you very much. I imported my mustang from California last autumn to Norway where I live, not many mustangs on the streets here... And not many people with much knowledge on mustangs

i would guess that your autometer gauge is not hooked up cause if the stock one gets unplugged then the car will not start and not run right. For a mechanical or electrical gauge if you don't have another bung in the coolant crossover you have to buy a t-fitting so both the stock one and aftermarket can be plugged in.

The autometer worked when I got the car, and sometimes it didn't. Now it's not working at all, so I guess it's hooked up. I belive it's something wrong with sensor, my Autometer or the wiring. Most likely the sensor or wiring

I have Autometer Instrument cluster Lunar series, it's electrical... If I knew wich wires for just the water temp gauge, it wouldn't be hard to follow the cables, but it's just 2 plugs with lots of wires on the back of the instrument cluster

Nice gauges BTW, i would follow the 2 wires coming off your temp sensor to make sure were they meet the rest of the harness everything is good. You could try replacing the temp sensor..those are the only 2 things i can think of.. as long as the rest of the gauges are working on the cluster..Good luck.

oh i thought you had an aftermarket water temp gauge, you actually got the instrument cluster. thats a whole other story bud. That cluster hooks up just like the stock cluster and reads off the computer. Then everything is pretty much stock and i don't know why your isn't working anymore cause mine stock water temp reading did the same thing 3 years ago. Thats why i have an aftermarket 2 1/16 gauge. I guess you can try to replace the sensor.

I'll replace it if I only could find it... If i could find it, it's not to hard to find out if the sensor is broken or not. I belive the sensor that MustangMatt96GT show in the picture above, is the one for the "brain" of the engine and not for the gauge...

For those of you that are interested, I found a site where you can download Ford Service Manuals on dvd for free. Don't know if I'm allowed to post links in the forum, but if u PM me I can send it to you. I've downloaded it myself, but as I live in Norway I'm not that good at technical english

if you can't find it then something is wrong. look to the left of your altenator and you will see a 2 wire connector plugged into a sensor in your intake. BINGO there ya go

So it is the sensor with the 2 wires that's highlighted in the picture above that goes to the gauge then... I was told different from a mechanic friend of mine. Then I guess one of the wires go to the gauge, and the other to the cars computer :wink

its just a thermoresistor, find out how many ohms that is suppose to read and test across the 2 wires and see if its putting out the proper ohms.

post up that link man, we love links!

I'll look more into it tomorrow. Getting late here now, and I have to get up for work in 5 hours.
