I have seen water pumps on other vehicles where the propeller has fallen off inside, so it could be a possibility that maybe a fin fell off and jammed it up but I've never seen it happen on a Mustang before, I would rip it out and check it out though if it is giving you problems.

Yes water pumps can lock up and eat your serp. belt. If i was you i would replace the waterpump.. and sense your going to be replacing it i would just upgrade to a elec. pump and get some extra hp out of it. Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

Was the impeller in one piece when you removed the original pump?

Check real close.

Do Ford's have plastic impellers like some other cars do? (I don't know, I'm asking)

1. Water pumps do freeze up but it is rare unless they have plastic impellers.
2. Generally, you will see some signs of it getting ready to fail. Dripping from the weep hole is common as well as rattling noises.

Sounds to me like there might be shrapnel still in the cavity and that's why the new one froze on you.

Are you sure it's not the idler pulley?

the bearings can go on a water pump and do but not very often out of the 20 a week i sell maybe 2 have bearing failure, usually just a gasket but since its off you might as well change it i say.

I havent taken it off yet I am going to take it off this week to try to fix it. The only thing that I had changed was the serpentine belt not the pump.

yea thats what i thought. Deff change out that pump.. and yes ford does make cars with the plastic impellers. I hate those things! But i am not sure if our mustangs have them. My water pump has been great for 100K *knock on wood* so ill let you know when it fails.
