Remove Automatic Shift Knob

I got a new automatic shift knob for my 2000 GT (AOD) but I cannot figure out how to remove the stock one. There is a small hole on the front of the shifter, but because of its location, I cannot tell if there is a screw in there and what shape/size it is. I tried using eyeglass repair screwdriver but it didn't catch anything so it's either to small or there isn't anything in there. Can anyone help with this? I appreciate it.

I believe that there is a clip in the back that is recessed that resembles a staple.

pull that out(a flat head should work) and it should come off.

as for installing... it is the same way unless you have an OD button.

My shift knob has the overdrive button on the side. I removed the tiny set screw in the back of the knob, finally, but now I can't pull it off the shaft. I've pushed the selector button in and I've pulled and pulled and it won't budge! Help please!

Im not sure what the problem is.

maybe someone with an auto can help you.

I will give you this tid bit of info though.

be careful with the OD button when you do get the shifter off.
you don't want to tear those wires

and does your aftermarket one even have a button for OD?

i bought the first product (first link), which took 7 weeks to receive by the way incase anyone was thinking about ordering. I tried following those directions but the step that says after the screw is out, push the selector button in and the handle will lift off, well that doesn't happen. I've wrestled with it and it does not budge! I'm not sure what to do!

Did you move the gear selector to 1st gear and then try to remove the handle?
I just ran outand tried it on mine and it came right off.

yeah i followed the directions exactly...pulled the handbrake, shifted to first, pressed in the selector knob and lifted up, its stuck! That's really odd.

finally after struggling for a few days, I took it to the ford dealer, and like I feared, the guy yanked the handle off and ripped the overdrive wires. It was gonna cost $25 for a new overdrive button, so I was like screw it and I went to radioshack and bought a $3 toggle switch to which I wired the overdrive. So finally after all that headache, I have my new shift knob, and an extra toggle switch, although now I have an overdrive relocation kit available, if anyone is interested. Thanks for all your help guys. After I receive my boot, I will post pics.
