grinds into 3rd, hard to get in 2nd

I'm new to the forum and was trying to find someone with the same type problem but couldn't. Can anyone help. 1st is fine but shifting into 2nd it feels like it doesn't want to go in. and then into third just trying to go it grinds...but if i delay and push to the right it usually goes in fine. 4th and 5th are fine. But i was wondering if anyone knew what could be wrong before i take it to a shop?

sounds like the synchros are bad. It is more difficult to shift at higher rpms? Could also be a bent shift fork. Synthetic fluid may help a bit but it is not going to cure the problem.

Welcome to MM. Post some pics of your car.

Mine does the same thing. I'm planning on changing my fluid soon. I read in an old post that the B&M ATF works really well in our trannies.

I'm gonna try and get some pics up soon. Thankx for the welcome orange. I was planning on getting an MGW shifter didn't know if that would help at all.

What kind of mustang do you drive? The first order is to assess you fluid level and whether or not there is presence of metal debris. More than likely your gears or syncros are either going bad or gone. The repairs could be costly so research purchasing a new set of gears and upgrading you mechanisms. Hope this helps. If I knew the model I might be able to help more. Another obvious point is when shifting is you clutch fully depressed. I know this sounds silly, but my wife did that on my last mustang gt and it was a simple fix I told her she couldn't drive it anymore. HAHA.

I mentioned before about the tranny pan. I had a manual and swapped it out for an automatic for racing. Sorry for the mix up.

When I bought my 2001 gt, the difference in the gear-box throw, clutch depression and gear power from my 96 gt was substantial. Shorter throw, more power outta every gear and a better hold with the clutch...but these cable clutches ARE stiff. NOBODY is more anal about perfect shifts in their 2001-2004 GT than me after already replacing a clutch in my old one. I NEVER even use first gear in this car unless Im pulling out of a parking space...because the gear is so short and the car so powerfull, feathering from 2nd 95% of the time can safely be your new method...worked for me, my GT has 110,000 on it with no clutch service and Ive never had a problem driving it like that.

Are you guys using synthetic tranny fluid? That should help a lot.

SteviGX, I hate to say it, but it sounds like you might have some transmission repair in your future.

mine strugles to get into reverse sometimes and i go through all the gears and it sometimes stops but usually its two or three try's. and mine is when the clutch is fully engaged...to the floor with a stall before shifting into 3rd.
