Is adding more air always a good thing?

So the car came with a 55mm throttle body. I upgraded to a 75mm with my Typhoon Intake kit years ago now. I am looking at the BBK 78mm throttle body. What kind of effect would come of this and is it a good idea. I noticed nothing but good things with what im already running. My cold air whistles pretty good so it would seem my current setup did the trick, what more could I gain or lose?

I went from a 65mm to a 70mm and saw no gains with my blower setup at 300rwhp.

It's the upper plenum that is more of a restriction. You could add all the flow of a 70 or 75, but still be restricted by the upper plenum.

You won't see any gain going from 75 to 78. Forget the outlandish advertised horsepower gains, independent dyno tests have shown that you normally only get a 2-3 rwhp gain going from a stock to an aftermarket TB/Plenum.

Eagle, didn't you once say you'd be making something like 450 RWHP if you would have seen all the advertised gains? It disappointed me, whatever it was.

Yes, I threw that out for discussion. Some of the advertised gains are way out there. I've seen advertisements saying that a TB/Plenum will give you up to 20 rwhp. That is crazy. The supercharger's advertised gains were pehaps the closest. They advertise 50-60% increase (8-10 psi) which puts the car around 350-370 rwhp. The 75mm TB/Plenum, electric water pump, long-tube headers all combined gave me maybe 5-15 rwhp depending on the dyno. Without any changes my car has dynoed as low as SAE 370 rwhp and as high as SAE 383 rwhp. The most disappointing mod was the LT headers. I saw no gain at all. And I'm not the only one. Forget the advertisements they will maybe get you 5-7 rwhp n/a and 10-12 rwhp supercharged--if you are lucky.

More flow does not always equal more power. Air velocity is also important. If you install something that is capable of flowing too much air, the velocity of the air can decrease resulting in power lost. You want to find that nice middle groud betweeen flow & velocity.

That's why a lot of guys recommend a 70mm TB for N/A and 75/78 for power adder applications.

Eagle..that sucks that you didn't pick up any top end from the LT's. Did you pick up anything in the mid-range?

My original tune was rich (9.9) mid-range and lean (12.4) at 6,000 rpms. I had pegged the MAF. I bought an MAFia and since I had to have a new tune I also bought LTs. The first pull without the new tune was almost identical to the chart without LTs. The new tune (a steady 11.6) gave the car 10-15 rwhp and 15-25 rwtq mid-range by getting rid of the rich condition but I lost peak horsepower. Matt is making around 430 rwhp. When he put on LTs (identical to mine) he saw around 10 rwhp increase. There are others who have seen no increase on the dyno from LTs. Almost everyone who is reporting gains have done more than one thing. Personally, I think an off-road mid-pipe will give you more gains than LTs. But I'm still running the stock cams and intake manifold. I think cammed motors that spin higher have reported better gains.

Long-tubes are expensive and hard to install. They should be the last mod that you do and only if you are trying to squeeze every last horsepower out of the motor.

Edit: To be fair the pulls were on different dynos months apart. The chart without the LTs was on a Mustang Dyno. The chart with LTs is on a Dynojet. It actually looks to me that the Mustang dyno is slightly higher mid-range than the Dynojet. The new tune, of course, changed everything.

Mustang Dyno with LTs:

dynojets and mustang dynos are very different and you probably had more gains than you think. but either way when it all comes down to it, the butt dyno is what matters most

OP, what other modifications do you have?

You can definitely use the BBK 78MM throttle intake when you install that Vortech S/C but I wouldn't install it prior to that as you will not flow enough air to see any gains from it.

I would personally recommend doing a PI swap before you upgrade throttle-body. Getting PI heads/cams in the car will get you about 30-40whp over your stock heads/cams and that's going to be much more significant a gain than a TB or similar intake modification.
