Looking to overhaul my 04 GT - Need advice

Hey I'm looking for some advice.

I own a Mustang GT 2004 with about 100k miles on it. It's been my daily driver for the past 5 years or so.

I am going to be purchasing a new car soon, so I want to convert my mustang into a life long "fun" car for the weekends. I am looking to have it repainted to fix the scratches as well as increase the performance & handling. 350-400 rwhp would be ideal.

It's completely stock right now, since there is 100k miles on the engine is there anything I should do to "freshen" up the engine before doing these mods?

Heres a list of items I want to purchase and have installed, do you think these are the right choices to increase my handling and rwhp? Can my car support these mods, am I missing any thing? Please share your opinions on what I should be purchasing to really hook my car up, thanks!

with 100k on the motor, id replace all bearing and gaskets in the motor before adding any performance parts to get you in that ball park horsepower wise. just my personal opinion. or since your in no rush to do this you can find you a 98 cobra engine block (teksid engine block to be exact), and some cobra C heads (03-04 cobra) and start from there and your horsepower numbers will be achievable more easily than running 2v. but others might say your motors fine with the miles that are on it, just consider how youve driven the car and the miles on it are gonna have internal parts that have "stretched, loosened up, on the verge of given out" im actually in the process of building a 5.4 lightning motor to replace the heart of my mustang right now so kind of in the same boat as you on which way should i go and what to do.

Cut out the Strut Tower brace. If you are doing headers, make them LT's. You don't need the touch screen tuner, but hey why not. And as far as the engine. Seafoam it.

You should look at adding sub-frame connectors in there as well as a good set of shocks and struts. Handling side needs to be dependent on your goal and what you want it to do. If you want a good street strip car or if you want to be able to handle with the M3s and such. I'm not a fan of Eibach unless it is strictly for looks. Also add a set of caster camber plates so you can get the front end aligned properly after you lower it.

IMO, i wouldn't waste the money on shorty headers. Not enough gain to make the cost of putting them in worth it. I prefer longtubes, at least with those you get something out of it. The tuner seems a bit much, a hand held will serve you just as fine. Also, i don't think you are going to need the 31 spline axles. You likely could use that money for something else like CC plates or a panhard bar. Don't forget your rear control arms.

I am really loving the replies thus far, keep them coming guys!

Gathering some really useful information here to make my beast of a car!

By the way, am I going to get looked at funny if I approach a mustang specialty shop with all these items and ask them to install them? How much do you think they would charge me for labor? I'm trying to draw up a rough estimate!

Thanks

A lot. Barely any of them are difficult to do yourself though. As far as brakes and tires for saving some money, read these:

Upgrade brakes ~ Speeding up slowing down

Choosing a new tire

Finding the ultimate goals of the car is important too as Smilie mentioned.

If you get 31 spline axles you need a 31 spline differential also

And for the 26 spline clutch you need a 26inch spline input shaft installed if you dont already know

If I were you, I'd change it up to Maximum Motorsports caster camber plates, their subframe connectors, their lower control arms, and quadrant. I'd also ditch the Ram clutch and go with a Centerforce.

I have a Fidanza steel flywheel, Centerforce DFX, 26 spline T56 6 speed, 03-04 Cobra aluminum driveshaft, 3.73s.. It's not even funny how much I get on this car, after dozens upon dozens of 0-60 runs in the 5 second range, 0-100 runs in the low 13 second area, it grabs as good as the day it was installed. Not to mention it already had 4,000 miles on it in an 11 second Cobra before I bought it used.

So, look what's going in my car again:

And if you could handle these things in person, you'd understand why I'm recommending MM products. These are MM caster camber plates. You can just feel the quality from handling them.

Everything else is a nice list though. But, instead of going to the extreme with a TSX touch screen, or going to the lower end with the SF3, why not the Livewire? It has a built in shift light, has an acceleration timer that you can set from 60 to pretty much whatever, lets you monitor exact coolant temperature unlike the dummy stock gauges, puts speed and RPM in a better line of sight if you choose to monitor those, bunch of stuff. You can even wire it up to display boost, instead of buying a seperate gauge.

Thanks Kevin, I will definitely look into replacing the items on the list with the ones you recommended!

I read camshafts improve performance when you have a supercharger..do you think this is necessary from your opinion? Thanks

If all you want is 350-400 at the wheels, the most I'd consider would be a mild stage 1 or stage 2 blower cam, just to relieve the stock internals a little, allow you to run less timing to achieve XXX power, etc.

Check the PI blower cams from Modular Head Shop.

I would run Ford OEM clutch cable and TO bearing. Don't go aftermarket on those items. Pretty much everything else I was gonna add, has already been said... lol

Thanks Jazzer, I'll go with ford's clutch cable then. I'm assuming it's better quality?

MM Clutch Cable, Universal Mustang, Ford OEM, 1982-04 [MMCL-11] : Maximum Motorsports, the Latemodel Mustang Performance Suspension Leader!

•Made in America for MM by the original Ford OEM vendor.
•This is not the same clutch cable sold by FRPP.
•All FRPP clutch cables have a completely different, non-OEM design and construction.
•FRPP clutch cables are made in Taiwan.
•Requires a firewall adjuster. Will not fit without a firewall adjuster.

Like others have said, factory TOB and cable is best, You have some of the most expensive parts out there, not neccesarily always better. I VHT'd my tails for about 20 bucks. MM cc plates I got for 150, CHE lca's for around 175, MAC lt's can be bought from CJponyparts for around 450.

Like others have said, the brakes are kinda overkill. See the kitty's sticky posted above.

Velly intelesting....

I did not know that!

Good to know, as pretty much all non-OEM cables end up fraying long before the Ford factory ones. If it is the same cable as OEM, sounds fine to me. I have never had an issue with a factory Ford cable
