i think my trans is going out


i was getting on the highway earlier, had it WOT, RPMs jumped, bounced the rev limiter and the trans made this awful howling noise and literally slammed into third gear hard enough to kick the car loose. car has 83k on the odometer.

get on it again and drive it around and see if it seems normal and maybe just something freak happened...does it keep doing it??

trans fluid is brown and has a pretty nasty stink to it. not like gear oil but like old engine oil.

it's done it a few times. this was the first time is made noise.

thats a big step to assume, that its busted, these are fairly tough trannys. change your fluid and filter first and go from there.

never delt with them, but if your budget is tight like you said, Id find a good used one mps auto salvage is a good place to start.,

well, any ideas on where to get a good performance trans that doesnt cost a fortune. i dont race, i just dont like being slow.

what you said above for an electronic over drive just dont exist, used maybe, but not new. Id honestly find a low milage unit. MPS auto salvage can help you out

i had a few bad deals with them. bought a quote "rebuilt" IRS from them that broke five miles down the road, bought another quote "rebuilt" trans for my v6 and it sheared 2 gears within a thousand miles. i would rather buy a performance trans that is new than a used one with god knows what has happened to it only to have it fail as well.

performance automatic is the place to go.

Or find a local shop to rebuild yours with built parts. If you can pull it out and put it in yourself then you can get out of this with a fairly built trans for under 1200

check local junk yard. i know here they go for about 250. Just have to get dirty and pull it out. just look mileage on car your taking it out of and check dipstick. Also come with warranty so get home and drop trans pan.
