would 3.27's cause turbo lag?
hey guys, been debating my gear situation lately. have 3.73's on my 00 auto, and i'm running about 115 ish at end of 4th. would like this to be a little higher, and wasn't sure if 3.55's will be a lot better. thinking of kicking it down to the stock gears especially when I'l be running higher boost soon. I just wasn't sure if this would create too much turbo lag. I'd appreciate any help.
thanks joshua |

I say 3.27's. Itll help spool the turbo quicker. Especially at your power level, 3.27s will be nasty. That thing will pull like a freight train to 140mph

Id pick up a convertor also if you dont have one, to go along with the 3.27's. The gears dont produce lag so to speak. The higher gearing will take a smidge more to get moving, but the torque should help walk all over that gearing, plus a convertor is just a bonus to help get into the power band and let the higher gearing help spool the turbos longer and pull harder as stated

thanks Shaun and 86er, exactly what I needed to know. I had originally wanted 3.55's but the shop got the wrong one's and I went with the 3.73's he had in stock versus keeping my 4.10's. he said if I wasn't happy with them, he would change them out at no charge whenever. so I'm thinking of doing that when i go back with the toyo's for retune and more boost d[-_-]b

Depending on your goals a little more gear will help track times with a turbo, bit turbos spool fastest with a continuous load which being an auto really helps. Getting a converter and some sticky tires will really helps getting more power out of the hole

yeah that hole .28 in gearing is HUGE these ratios. On a semi stock turbo car, you wont see much difference with the two.

The difference between 3.55s and 3.27s is 8.6%. The difference between 4.10s and 3.73s is 9.9%. Maybe the difference isn't much but there is a huge 4.10/3.73 debate. By the way, the difference between 3.73s and 3.55s is only 5.1%.
I understand why you might want to go to a higher gear on the street. It gives you a higher top end in third. If you're stopping at redline (115 with 3.73s) then your top speed would be 121 with 3.55s and 131 with 3.27s. You can only get to 140 by pushing it into the red. But I don't understand how this would be beneficial on the strip. With a trap speed of 115 mph, with 3.73s your rpms are around 5788 (readline), 3.55s they would be 5506, and with 3.27s they would be 5073. Turbos are supposed to reach max boost at 3500 but max horsepower would still be around 5800-5900 rpms. It seems to me that crossing the line at 5100 rpms leaves a lot on the table.

Keep the 373s and get in a 28in tall tire IMO. The 373s will be good for track use and the 355 for street. The 327s all good with non od transmissions like the c4 or th400

idk if it matters some said semi-stock car. it'll be pushing 16-18 psi and idk the horespower hoping for 600. to all the track talk, i'll have most likely less than 5 trips in next two years. when i finish college i'll be putting 3.55-3.73's back in and going into building it for track purposes. as for now I drive it daily to school and work without a second car if this one goes down.

I would not be counting on 4th as a track gear, you want to stay in 3rd when you get threw the traps
