MM'ers I need your opinion on this 01 SC'd stang!
I have been a mustang fan since as long as I can remember but could never really afford one. I finally have a job where i can afford to have a car payment (on top of my house payment/cost of living) but not sure I want to be trapped on a note for a new 5.0 for 5 years @ $420 a month.
My all time favorite stang are the termi's and 03/04 mach's so I have always loved the body style. I have stayed away from a used stang as Termi's and mach's fetch too much money IMO for how old they are (termi's still in the 20k area and mach's for 16k...too close to a new base 12 GT for 28k OTD I have already negotiated). I really love the new 5.0 and am anxiously awaiting the '13 refresh but this mustang is 45 minutes away from me and really caught my eye today. It is a 2001 Mustang GT with 29K miles on the odo! It has a vortech V2 (6 lbs) which was dyno tuned among other minor bolt ons. I really am not much into those rims but I am guessing I can sell them pretty easily? They are "ruff" racing rims... I found them on wheels next and for the staggered 19's (rims only) they are 1600! The tires are Goodyear Eagle F1's with 70+% tread left (which hell those are 300/tire front and 400/tire rear!) So the tire/rim combo new was roughly 2900 bucks! Any ideas on what I can sell the rims/tires for??? They look to be in great shape (no curb rash, good tread) but that is NOT my style at all. I would want some black deep dish 18 bullets. The guy who owns it now is the second owner and has only put 500 miles on it (he said he was planning on storing it to resell in 10 years but is moving). The previous owner was a car nut in his 60's who was thinning his collection (he had all the mods installed, current owner has not done anything that im aware of). The only issues are the car needs brakes (he claims front pads only but I would probably install full discs/pads F/R and flush the fluid just due to it being 10 years old). The other issue is he said the car is lowered 3 inches (too much imo) and the rear tires rub. I would probably install some -1 springs to get it back up to a reasonable ride height. I am guessing the shocks are trash being slammed 3 inches so would probably be replacing those as well. He said the fuel pump went out today when he tried to start it today so he was taking it in to get a new pump installed. The asking price is 8800 OBO. I have not kept up with used stang prices but that seems very reasonable to me. I found an 02 stock gt (looks a lot rougher, ad states it has paint chipping off bumpers and hood) with 102k miles on it for 7000 in the same city. I know mods dont help resale that much but this does appear to be a very clean/well taken care of car. Here are two higher res pics he emailed along with the listing from CL 2001 Mustang GT...30Kmiles Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It looks pretty well taken care of (hell my 03 SVT Focus is in MUCH worse shape and I try to take care of my stuff) but being over 10 years old it concerns me to have as a daily driver.... The low mileage is great but I also am afraid of the age and dont want to be replacing/repairing this car constantly. How well does an 01 stang hold up over time? Any well known problems to watch out for? Sorry for the long winded post but am curious as to what you guys think of this car. I am planning on maybe test driving it tomorrow. What would you guys pay for this car assuming the above problems are my out of pocket expense. Thanks in advance! Mike Last edited by r00st; November 6th, 2011 at 07:28 PM. |

As a DD no, as a tinker toy yes. Once i get back from down range, any mustang i have will never be used as a DD unless it is absolutely necessary.

I was looking at that car on CL the other day. I'd buy it if I could.

Looks clean as hell. I wonder what kind of springs?
As for the fuel pump thats being replaced, hopefully its one that can support the blower. Very clean car, Id definitley check it out.

seems like a sick deal to me...especially with those low of miles...i prolly would have bought that before i bought mine..I paid 8k for mine and i thought that was a great deal with all the stuff that had been done to it even with the high miles...i got about the same drop on mine to...gotta watch out for bumbs...at highway speeds it feels great, really smooth...

Judging by the pic of the shock towers in the engine bay I am going to guess no on the coil overs...which means I am assuming the struts are worn out. I know struts wear fast with moderate drops so I can imagine a 3 inch drop = death to struts ASAP.
I would definately pull those springs out and put in something with a 1 to 1.5 inch drop. It does look EXTREMELY clean. And my thoughts are...someone who takes care of the body and interior that well (cant see a blemish in the paint with great reflection and spotless cloth seats) means they took care of the engine/maintenance. The current owner is a younger guy that I guess has only put 500 miles on it (claims he was going to store it to resell in 10 years cuz of the low mileage but is now moving so has to sell). Does running 6-10 pounds of boost max out the stock fuel pump? I will have to find out what kind of replacement pump was installed to ensure proper fueling. What would you guys pay for this car as it sits knowing it will for sure need springs (probably struts since I would be in there anyway) and brakes all around? I am going to ask for the dyno or the shop that tuned it. I want to see the A/F to make sure its a safe tune. If none is available I would probably want to strap it to a dyno to ensure the tune is safe. |

I would replace the fuel pump with a 255lph fuel pump. How much power is it making? I would bring it to a tuner, and have them check out the tune and the AFR. Just to be safe.

Ya shit happens
It was listed a few days ago and I Just made contact with the guy today so I figured it would sell quick after he told me he had people interested pending the fuel pump replacement.I probably wont find another car this clean that is SC'd for this price. Anything over 10k and I would almost just rather get the stock high HP of the 5.0 with a warranty. The payments will suck but for the first 5 years (I would get the extended warranty) most all repairs will be on ford's tab, at the cost of 425 a month

Something like this does not seem to bad. The aesthetic mods are a bit gaudy (imo) but I am not a flash/chrome type of guy. Looks like this guy has put his heart and soul into this car. Buying a SC'd car in good shape for 12k would be a very small loan for me which would be awesome. The higher the price goes the more it makes sense to just swing for the new car though. I checked out some 05-07 SC'd GT's and they are in the 16-20k range which is a $250 payment but no warranty. |
