Engine Rebuild Questions

OK i have 135k on this 2 valve. it runs great, motor pulls strong, doesnt smoke ect. im one of those picky fucks tho and Im wondering if a rebuild is necassary. I dnt kno if a rebuild would give me back some lost power. What do you guys think? And if so what xaclty would be needed aside from rings and bearings and do you recommend stock or aftermarket bearings ect? need some input

Clevite bears FTW. but if your worried about it why not let that motor run as is, and build you a second engine to put in if something happens to yours. maybe start with a teksid block, make it a little more powerful.. ie forced induction, stroker, spray? something if you want a little more fun.

When im done with building my new engine i plan on doing something with my tired 4.6 (only 104xx on the clock but its due for a rebuild after finding a couple leaky gaskets and some particular things i dont like

1.) These motors will run a long time before they need to be freshened up. These are the same motors they put in taxis and police cars, and go out to 300-400k with regular maintainence.

2.) If you're just doing a "rebuild" you might be better off getting a low mile used motor. Look into either a MKVIII (DOHC) or a Explorer motor. Both can be had for a couple hundred. The MKVIII will take some adaptation, but we've got a thread for that. Both are aluminum blocks and will save you some weight.

3.) If you are going to tear into it, you might as well upgrade. Better pistons/crank/rods/cams etc...

im not sre how i feel about boost just yet. i kno its a def possibility but just not yet. But as for those Mark VIII motors where do you see them for a couple hundred? ebay craigslist?? that sounds great. But im always ify about 4v's bcuz of the infamous head ticks. hence the reason i gotta gt and not a mach. i love the fact how i can beat the shit outta the car and the motor takes it with no issues

Junkyards are one place. You probably could on ebay. Most junkyards charge a flat rate for engines, the ones around here are $300-400.

I wouldn't shy away from them because of the head tick. The head tick was only really prominent on 03 Cobras. MKVIII's didn't have it because they were B heads, (96-98) and the tick was in C heads. They revised the cooling passages in 04, so 04+ are generally safe. You generally won't get the tick unless you have a boosted car (thus not common in 99/01 Cobras and Mach 1's), and if you're worried, just get a head cooling mod. I made one for under $50.

If you want to get the C heads, which open more options for using 03/04 Cobra parts, you have other options like the 99/01 Cobra's, 03/04 Mach's, Lincoln Aviators, Mercury Marauders, etc...

My guess is probably not. I've got 156,000 miles on mine and the dyno this year showed it was making the same power as it did 5 years ago when I put the blower on and when it only had 80,000 miles.
