Seond Gear is being a b*tch
Hey Guys,
I just had new fly wheel, clutch, aluminum quadrant, throw out bearing, firewall adjuster installed by a shop. When I take off from 1st (reved up to say 5k-6k RPMS) and try to shift into second it won't go in (it's very rare if it does), it will even grind some times. I don't have any issue with second gear when I'm driving like a normal person, it only happens when my engine's spinning high. My clutch's engagement point is pretty close to the floor. No other gear has this issue... which is odd, and which makes me think it's not the low engagement point. PS. Which way do I turn my firewall adjuster to raise the engagement point? Thanks |

Turn counter-clockwise. This is the problem...... the clutch probably isn't disengaging enough. This adjustment will remedy the problem and make your problems disappear. You will be able to fine tune the clutch engagement point with the firewall adjuster.

Thanks, sorry for all the questions, but did you have to keep starting your car to test the adjustment? Also how many clicks would you turn it counter-clock wise before testing the engagement point again, how many turns is a significant change to the clutch?

I start the car, turn it a bit and test the clutch feel. I've also go a freeplay kit so my adjustments probably feel and work a little different than yours.

Yeah, it's a trial and error kinda thing. Good news though, once you get it where it needs to be you're pretty much done. It will require some minor adjustments as the clutch wears but its not very often.

Yeah,
Have one more problem, my clutch rattles a bit when my foots off it. I can move it slightly left or right, or up and down (like 1/4 inch) but it's enough to have this annoying rattle when I'm idle. Should I just tighten the bolt, I'm assuming it just got lose over time. Thanks |

Are you saying the clutch pedal is rattling? If that's what you're saying I've never had any issues with the clutch pedal rattling and if you have proper clutch cable tension on the pedal it wouldn't rattle.

Adjust the cable til there is no slack at the firewall adjuster.
