VIN doesn't match engine

So I just recently had a head gasket start leaking. I got to looking at my engine just to find out some more information about it since I'm going to be tearing it all apart here in a few days and I noticed my VIN doesn't seem to match what engine I have. It's a 4.6l 2v with 11 bolt cam covers which what I've been reading would suggest it's a Romeo. I've also been reading that Romeo's have a W in the VIN and Windsor's have an X. My car is a 2001 GT. In 2000 they stopped putting Windsor's in these cars.

So my question is, should I be wondering if my car has had a different engine put in it, even though this information suggests it never should have had a Windsor in it? It just seems strange to me that an 01 would even have a 1 and an X in the VIN. My VIN is 1FAFP42X51 by the way.

I'm pretty sure from the information I've been reading it's a Romeo engine. I'm just kind of wondering, it would be nice to know if my engine has been replaced. I'm also just going off info I've found on the internet, so I might be completely wrong, but I'd really like to know in case I have to get some parts and my engine isn't what the VIN says it is.

so i can pretty much assume then that my engine has been changed if it is in fact a romeo. it is a late 01 though, late enough to have a tr3650 in it. Manufacture date is 08/01, looks like they went pretty late into the year.

probably not the best idea to leave your vin out there like that, considering these forums are open to anyone on the internet. as for the motor, a dealer might be able to check it out to make sure?

Yeah true, I could try that out. I'm pretty much convinced that it's not the original engine, but maybe a dealer can get me a little more info on it. Who knows, I guess we'll see. Thanks for the help, looks like I'm just going to have to go see what they think and pull it all apart.

Is there a serial number on these engines anywhere? I've been looking and can't seem to find one.

The W is the old 5.0 code. All 4.6 Mustangs have an X whether they have a Windsor motor or a Romeo motor. It doesn't matter. 11 valve cover bolts are Romeo motors and most likely your motor has not been changed.
