Question

Oil Gauge Problem

I started up my car today and noticed it took about 30 seconds for the oil gauge to move at all. It normally moves right to the center of the gauge on start up. At first thought it was just a delay and maybe never noticed it before. But then it went back down all the way again, then back to the middle, it did this for about 45 seconds. Then it stayed in the middle, I started driving everything was fine. I stopped at a red light and it went down again, I took off it went up again, then down when I stopped. Then it went to the middle and stayed for the rest of the trip. Do you think the pump is going bad or maybe the sensor?

Mine actually reads oil pres when it feels like it. Checked oil level. Good to go so it doesn't bother me.

Oil level and oil pressure are two entirely different things. I won't drive a car if I think there is an oil pressure problem. I've seen too many people lock up their motors driving with the idiot light on. The worst case secenario is that your oil pump is failing. However, I had a similar problem. In my case it was a $8.95 oil pressure indicator switch. From the way your oil pressure gauge is acting I suspect that's your problem. The switch is located beside the oil filter and is very easy to change.

8.95 sounds like something worth changing out, not to expensive. Did you get it from Ford or some where like autozone? Also how hard was it to change?

Diffintly stop driving it and put that oil sender switch in immeditaly just so ur sure, it still does it change ur filter and oil if all fails its ur pump buy u really wanna narrow it down b4 u end up needing a engine, just even a couple of seconds wo oil will destroy it

oil is due for change next month but only due to age not mileage. There is also no oil leaks and the car doesn't burn oil. I will go for the switch tomorrow.

I noticed that both of you have 2000 GTs. That is what mine is. If yours is a mid-year build you may have to go back to Autozone. I bought the 2000 GT switch but it wasn't the same as the one that was in it. I went back to Autozone and discovered that Ford made a mid-year change. My car took a 2001 oil pressure switch.

In that case I will buy both and return the unused one. I have to double check the sticker but I think mine is June.

I have a 2000 body with an unknown motor. How can I find out if mine is a early or mid. Besides valve cover bolts.

Look at the sticker in the drivers side door jamb. It will have the build date on it.

Valve cover bolts won't tell you anything about a 2000. All of them had Windsor motors. It was mid-year 2001 that Ford started putting in the Romeo motors. If the motor has been replaced then you don't even know the year. In that case I take the old one out, plug the hole with a rag so that oil doesn't drain everywhere, and drive a different car to Autozone to match it.
