Im thinking about repainting my stock valve covers in the next couple days. Anyone have suggestions of the best way to go about this so it doesnt peel off?

i just roughed em up and then washed them with those sos pads with the built in degreaser shit.. and painted them with high temp engine spray paint i got from autozone..the only reason there is anychips is from my mafs hitting the corner of it..oil nor gas has even touched the finish and its 2 years old..i threw them in the oven for 10min while they were drying..heres a quick look of them, i wish id have done the black crinkle paint tho..

1: Thoroughly clean the valve covers with degreaser. Even Dawn detergent will do.
2: Scuff everywhere with a 3M scuff pad. I used the red one. Make sure you get every crevice, and rough it up plenty.
3: Clean again with a lint free rag and some acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Something that evaporates and leaves no residue. Better still if you can use a tack cloth. A tack cloth is not required or necessary, but is "best practice."
4: Mask off as desired.
5: Hit that baby with some hi-temp engine paint. I used the Duplicolor which surprisingly worked out well, despite my bad experiences with their laquer based body paint in the past. When spraying stay perpendicular to the surface, coat in even, slow sweeps, overlapping 50%. Adjust distance so that you don't have it too far to get dry spray, but not too close that you get runs. You want the paint to flow evenly.
6: Let it flash off for 5-15min depending on conditions
7: Hit it with another 2 coats or so.
8: Let it dry and admire your work.

Hope it turns out like this:

Disclaimer: Painting your valve covers WILL NOT turn your engine into a 4v.

That hi temp shit peels very easy. If you want a REALLY nice quality job. Find your nearest auto body supply store and ask them to mix you up some urethane paint in a can, with a can or two of urethane clear. Urethane clear only lasts for 24 hours but it is the best period. Also ask them for the best can primer they got. Primer is KEY to a quality job as well...

Nooo. I used urethane paint AND urethane clear. Urethane paint and clear is the same paint and clear used on the exterior of vehicles.

Sure you could spend $250 having them powdercoated. Or you could spend about $40 and have the same quality

Well I'm glad the PO took care of all the powdercoating on my blower/timing cover/pulley bridge.

But I'm intrigued by the urethane. Maybe I just have experience with crummy urethane, I think it was the Summit generic one, but my friend had terrible luck with it.

As far as what I used, I haven't had any problems with the hi-temp enamel. I've mainly used it on engine blocks before, and they get pretty toasty. I even had one friend coat his headers with it, and it held up fine there. It probably doesn't look as good as urethane, but I don't have any questions as to its integrity, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper too.

What brand do you use? I've generally stuck to lacquer and even dabbled with some waterborne paints, but I'm not well versed in urethane brands.

Still tough to beat a $3 rattlecan of enamel though.

I'm not a big fan of enamel as it sometimes gives you that hazy clear if it's not quality.

Here's the clearcoat I use. It's awesome!

Spray Max Rapid Cut-in Spot Clearcoat aerosol
