Advise for people looking to start modding - 4.10 gears
A little history first:
I bought my 98 Mustang GT in 2005, ever since, I have continually upgraded and modded the car. In 6 years I've put it in, in aftermarket parts, more than the car was originally worth. I've put money for interior and exterior mods but mainly for performance such as: Underdrive pulleys, Cold Air Intake, 75mm throttle body and plenum, PI intake swap, port and polish, Ford Racing clutch, Steeda Short Throw Shifter, Royal purple oil everywhere and always, Long tube headers, no cats, x pipe, flowmaster catback, really good street summer tires, among other things. Present time: Just this weekend I decided to install a set of 4.10 gears with complete differential rebuilt kit (after 150,000 miles it kinda needed it lol). It is hands down the BEST mod I've done (only very closely followed by the PI Intake swap). It brought the Mustang back to life, something I have never felt before. There is no lag for acceleration, it responds on a 1:1 ratio with your foot on the pedal. It made me wish I did this mod back in 2005. So for the new guys looking to see what mod to go with first, or for the old guys thinking about 4.10s. DO IT NOW! You will not regret it. I also have the SCT tuner coming up here in the following months and I feel that's also going to be a really good surprise. Anyway, just my opinion. But I know my car inside out. I know how it performs, how it sounds, how it handles, and this mod changed all those aspects completely and only for the good. |

you should add up how much you have in small bolt ons and see how far away you would be if you would have done a supercharger first.

LOL Stal keeping it real.
OP, yeah 4.10's is a really good mod for these cars, especially NA.That was one of the first mods I did. Besides a catback. I would take 4.10's over 3.73s anyday. I honestly dont like them with the blower. There not bad, but 4.10's it was quicker without a doubt. I like the top end though Now, start peicing togeather a blower setup or nitrous.

4.10s are a great gear. Because of the amount of time I spend on the interstate I feel that 3.73s are perfect for my application. I think they were right for me even in the quarter because I don't want to push the tach deep into the red.

I personally want to go back to 3.73s but i think anyone maing over 300 at the wheels should go 3.73s. I spend so much time shifting in autocross its annoying and time consuming to be honest, but more annoying than anything. on a regulation SCCA course Ive been all the way to 4th gear... Ive got a set of FRRP 4.10s and a complete rearend with 4.10s im looking to get rid of/trade for 3.73s if anyones down? i'd trade it all for a 31 spline 3.73 set up. just putting it out there lol

Making over 300rwhp should have 3.73s? Fuck that! I miss the 4.10s so bad. I understand with autoX. But for street/highway/track, 4.10s are so fun. Heres this GT with 520rwhp and 4.10s...bitch rolls out
Anyways, Im looking to swap to 4.10's but Idk if I want to trade. Id almost just rather buy a brand new set to be safe.

Shaun, you also have no problems running your motor to 6500 rpms. Some of us don't want to do that.

Thats true...But, an NA car should be fine at 6000rpm with 4.10's.
My gas peddle had gotten stuck a couple times before and hit the rev limiter at 6800rpms. The first time it happend I was so confused to what the hell was going on. So it sat there hitting the limiter for a few seconds. lol....oops

i do my own installs with gears so i swap them out so i can find the perfect gear for the track. i just went form 3.55's to 3.73's which most people would think its not worth but i gained 2 mph in the 1/8th, which is deff worth it.

Yeah, most likely I've spent more on bolt-ons than what I would have spent on a supercharger. But, there is the time factor, this has been over 6 year, saving for a supercharger would've meant keeping the car stock for 6 year which is impossible for me haha. The other thing is that for some reason I prefer not to have supercharger or nitrous, so for this car, maybe I'll just do some ECU tuning and some cams and that will be it. I'm looking to get a 2013 in about a year so I gotta stop putting money on the 98. |

Actually, thats a really flattering picture of Roseanne, LOL. I saw her on TV a couple weeks ago spouting some left-wing liberal shit. Bitch is sooooo ugly, she has to sneak up on a glass of water to get a drink........
As for Jessica Biel, she's freakin' hot! Just remember, no matter how hot she is, no matter how cool she seems, someone, somewhere is sick of her shit!

A couple years ago I read a thread started by someone who had 480 rwhp and 4.10 gears. On the street, going around corners, passing cars, the car kept trying to get away from him. He was wondering what to do because he couldn't afford new gears. Personally, I think the car scared him a little.
Yes, I know that he needed to learn throttle control. But traction on the street isn't the same as traction on a prepped track. Actually after I read his post I was wondering what it would be like to drive 500 rwhp with 4.10s in the snow.

410s are fun at first but they get old.. I can't get on my car In 1st or 2 nd because of tire spin.. And I want a lil longer 1st gear.. It's actually easier for me to take off In second gear

It all comes down to tires and the person behind the wheel. You have to remember that while the car makes 500 rwhp, that's at WOT. If you're easy with the throttle and have decent tires, rain/snow really isn't any worse than it was at 300 rwhp. That being said, these cars aren't exactly renowned for their ability to move about in the white stuff.
