Blue Magic Putty

So by now i've made about 3 posts regarding this exhaust leak i've had since my midpipe install. After nothing seemed to work we finally decided to put u some RTV around the flange/manifold seal. Instead I found this little black tube with putty inside called blue magic. One of the main uses was for manifold leaks and withstanding temperatures of over 500 degrees. This stuff is amazing! It hardened up in minutes and made a perfect seal, so now my monster leak is completely fixed. I suggest this to anyone looking to fix an exhaust leak for their car.

Are you serious or being sarcastic? If you're serious then thats exactly what i need. I've never learned how to weld, nor do i have the equipment and all the the exhuast shops around here bend you over and rape you for simple weld jobs.
Case and point, i got charged 40 bucks for a guy to put my car on a lift, cut 2 holes in my exhuast with a cutting torch and weld in 2 o2 bungs. All of which took a total of 10 minutes, if that.

Sounds like $40 well spent to me.

The simple fact is, while he makes it LOOK simple, doing it right takes years of practice and experience, and if you don't have a welder or don't know how to weld, paying him $40 to use his lift, his welder, and his time sounds like a hell of a deal. I charge $110/hour for my computer services, and yes I make it look easy but I have to learn new things every single day to keep it going.

Long story short, if someone has a skill you need but don't have, and he doesn't charge you a ridiculous amount of money (like say $80/$100 for half an hour's worth of work), then you're making out all right.

40 bucks, for 10 minutes worth of work, just doesnt sit well with me.
Im scared to see what they would charge for installing subframes.
At an hourly rate that would equate to 240/hr.
And before anyone says im fudging the time, from the time i pulled in, talked to the guy about what i needed, had the work done, and paid for the transaction, it had been 15 minutes total by the time i was pulling out of their parking lot.

2 cuts and 2 welds the size of a quarter for the price of a tank of gas? Even if I had tons of money i would think that was wrong.

I hate to bash here.......... but I'm gonna.

The shop has a $2500 lift, a $1000 welder not to mention the shops overhead including rent, insurance and payroll. $40 to put a car on my $2500 lift and weld two tiny little bungs in using my $1000 welder is a very fair price.

Well, hell if this is normal practice then ill just go spend that money to get taught how to weld and do it in our shop, cuz if i could do it i wouldnt ever charge that much for that little of work.

I don't think that's a bad price. The $40 isn't just for his time. Think about the tools he had to purchase in order to do that job in 10 minutes. Do you have a cutting torch? Do you have a lift? Do you have 2 o2 bungs? Are you renting a building to do your work? Not only does he have to cover his time, he also has to cover his overhead. $40 seems pretty darn good.

For example, lets look at my Jeep. The exhaust pipe is clamped right behind the muffler. That clamp broke and the pipe would rest against the heat shield on the gas tank and rattle. I took it to a small guys shop and had him weld it. All he did was use a hammer to put the pipe into the muffler, line it up, and weld it. He was going to charge me $5. He can't even get dinner for that price. I gave him $30 because I thought it was a fair price to cover all his expense and make a little bit of money.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm cheap. But I still think people (especially a SMALL local business) should be able to make some money.

you are inexperienced about welding, and should listen to the multiple people telling you, you didnt get ripped off. Welders dont charge by the hour usually, they charge by square inch.

Just out of curiosity then, how much is the going rate per square inch? Estimated guess?

given the two options A; let him weld it up to some degree of proficiency for $40 or B: you get under there with a drill, a coat hanger with jumper cables and hog it all up

I'll take A and spend the $40 and like it ...... IMHO
