Proper Gear Rebuild

04 GT manual.

Swapping to 4.10s, what is the best rebuild kit to cover all my bases. Car has 98k. I see all types of rebuild kits, some with/without bearings, traklock?

In reality id like to get rid of all types of traction control if possible and just have a raw rear end, if that makes sense? Prob not an option tho id imagine, or even beneifical?

So no need for trakloc discs? I'm not even sure how they work or what there for, just happen to see them on the American muscle site.

Ya that's why I'm wondering about them or anything else back there that should be replaced. What is there purpose anyhow? Just for traction control??

The clutch discs in the trac-loc rear end are what engage both tires at the point when one starts to slip. It will "lock" the wheels together and they will both spin, rather than just one.

The bearings are for the actual pinion gear itself, which sticks through the differential and turns the ring gear. The typical response seems to be to replace the bearings if you car has 50k+ miles or so, and to replace the clutch discs if you are getting the one-wheel-peel and or you feel like not having to worry about them for a while.

I'm assuming you're not planning on doing this yourself, in which case talk to the shop who will do the install and ask them to replace the clutches if they need it.

The "raw" rear end you're talking about is a locked differential, which sucks balls on a car driven on the street. I owned a jeep that had a welded differential, and it wasn't much fun to drive on the street. Off road, it was nice, but turning and parking was miserable.

^this

And as far as the raw rear end hes referring to, i think he just wants a rear end with no abs and no traction control.... But I could be wrong

Ok I'll be doing discs also just to be safe. I do all my own work, so yes I'll be doing this myself. I've replaced spider gears/axles on numerous trucks however I've never messed with this trakloc setup I'm sure there's a DIY out there.

while you're in there i would recommend getting a re-build kit for the limited slip. if you want it to operate like stock, i would give the kit with the kevlar clutch disks a shot. otherwise, guys that do gears alot told me to go ahead and get all the bearings. i think theres like 4 or 5 all together ??? counting the pinion bearing

Its pretty straight forward, but you would need some type of press to re-install the s-spring....it was a bitch.
