Rearmount Turbo??

Alright guys as most of you probably know, I'm gunna go F/I this summer. I was leaning towards a D1sc and building an engine later on the road but i started asking around with people who have done stuff like that and they say its tons and tons of money to get your car to high horse power. So I'm shooting for around 400rwhp with a 2.1kb. Some kid chatted me a facebook today and we started talking about cars and his crown vic that he wants to turbo and he asked me why don't I. I have way to much money into my headers to sell them and do a turbo. So he asked me what about a rearmounted turbo? I told him i haven't seen one before. So i was just wondering if anyone has every done a rearmount or if its even capable or doing it. Pros and Cons such on. Thanks

I don't know exactly, but there's a reason no one does a rear mount turbo. They have a slower spool time.

STS makes rear mount turbos. I checked their website and they only make them for 05 and up. You could build you own rear mount but with all the fab work it would be easier to replace you headers. It would also be cheaper to replace them if you aren't able to fab your own pipes.

i like the centri blower idea. especially if you dont want to loose your headers. i myself will be undertaking a turbo set-up for my 4v swapped GT. looking to get 400rwhp with 6-8psi. the biggest pro to running a turbo IMO is the efficency. they take no power to run as to where a blower will rob some power to turn. (probably very negligable)

there are plenty of guys on here at/near/over 400rwhp so it would seem that it isnt all that difficult to do. all you gotta do is throw boost and more fuel at it lol. but be careful because as we all know, our stock rods/pistons arent real great.

Rear mounts are terrible. Slower spool time, you could hit a bump and destroy the turbo etc... Get the d1sc. Centri FTW

Who says a D1 can't be fun on the street? After like 2k rpm's I believe, the torque and hp evens out the the centri will have more hp per psi than the KB. Eagle put a chart that shows it.

I honestly have a blast with the centri on the street. I've driven a turbo car, and my buddys cobra. i enjoyed the centri most. Then turbo. That's just me

Its been done before. It just doesn't seem like it would be a fun street car with all the lag.

i couldnt even imagine the piping to do this. i dont even know who came up with such a system honestly. seems almost as bad as those electric superchargers lol.

but to OP, a kenne belle will make for a nasty set-up. you should have no issues hitting 400rwhp with one. but it seems they are a bit pricey. a centri can be done on the cheap. Shaun has a good how-to on this
i like the whistle of them and the fact that you can run a cool BOV with one

Shaun why did you like the centri better? Just wondering. Bcs you can feel it go into boost or what. Yeah I looked all over youtube and only Found a few mustangs that were built for drifting that had rearmount turbos.

So far nothing beats the KB for fun factor. 315 tire shredding power at 20# but built shortblock.

Rear mount turbo's are the real deal. If you recall they did one on a Lightning on Trucks! and if I'm not mistaken Doug Van Den Brink's car runs one. They are a perfectly viable power adder. Most companies sell them as a universal kit.

However-
As mentioned about 14 times before, slower spool time. There's a greater volume between cylinder and turbine so of course you'll notice more of a delay.

The converse of this is on the compressor side as well. Think about all that piping. There's a greater opportunity for instability, as well as a longer time for boost to reach the manifold!

Not to mention expect less power from a comparable setup. Part of the energy in the exhaust gas isn't just kinetic, it's thermal. You'll lose a lot of heat from the manifold to the turbine, so there's less efficiency right there.

Of course the result of all this added equipment is greater weight. Never good.

And what puts the nail in the coffin for me, is the oiling system. You'll need lots more oil, and likely a remote oil pump to maintain pressure in the bearing. That's usually what happens to rear mount guys. The pump shits the bed or something else goes on, bam, your turbo is fried and you're boned.

I personally wouldn't do it. Centri or KB will be much easier and more efficient.

One of my old friends cousins friend or some shit had a sts on his ws6.

Had ridiculous amount of piping. Was fairly quick after hitting boost.
