I tune my own cars using SCT's Pro Racer Package software and XCalibrator 2's. No matter what hardware/software you go with, it is a steep learning curve, and you can easily destroy an engine if you make a mistake. That being said, if you're constantly making changes to your car(s) and needing to retune, or if you simply want the ability to make adjustments to the tune at will, it is very much worth the cost/time in my opinion.

A tuning manual and some hands on time with the software is the place to start. Don Lasota has a number of tuning manuals, videos, and guides available: SCT; Tuning guides; LaSota Racing Ford Tuning Index

Another software to use is the Delta Force Commando software. That is what I will be using. The Commando software comes with the Special Forces program, which will do a base tune for you after you answer some simple questions about your engine setup. After you get your base tune, Commando will allow you to go into your tune and make fine adjustments based upon your data logging.

That's true with any tuning software. You make adjustments to the tune file based on what you see in your datalogs.

If you want to use your SCT X3, you're going to have to use SCT's software.

Exactly. SCT has the Pro Racer software. I think that's what it's called.
