Harmonic Balancer failure

Has anyone had any problems with this harmonic balancer failing?

1996-04 Mustang 4.6L Street Harmonic Balancer by Professional Products at LRS - Same Day Shipping!

I had this thing put on with the supercharger less than a month ago and it's already wobbling... mechanic said the balancer is bad?

You get what you pay for these days.

Either get the stock balancer or get one that is SFI approved.

There's more options than that. You can get a March Performance SFI fluid dampened pulley for 115

I run the stock damper on my current motor in the car. On my new motor I'm running an Innovators West 8 Rib 10% OD damper. I see no use in putting a stock or cheap aftermarket balancer or oil pump in a new motor. Proper crankshaft end play, billet geared oil pump and IW Damper on anything I build.

If you want cheap order a new stock one from ModularHeadShop.com or buy the best IW.... I say buy an 8 rib so one day you can grow and already have the damper. I love the overdrive option also because you can run more boost with less belt slip normally.

If I'm not mistaken the used SFI underdrive setup on my car (I bought used pulleys from ebay) is professional products. Like I already said... used.... and on my car now. No wobble whatsoever. Works like a champ. Also keep in mind that these motors are assembled from the factory with an internal balance. Ford actually refers to the balancer as an auxillary balancer (in other words it's not necessary). I had a friend recently purchase a new edge that he wanted me to go over and I discovered several problems such as the NPI motor that had been swapped into the car but the first thing I spotted after that was the lack of a balancer. The car had piggy back underdrive pulleys but lacked the balancer bolted to the underdrive crank pulley. I started pulling info as well as a stock balancer off the shelf for him only to find out that Ford claims the motor to be internally balanced...... which goes inline with the fact that the motor idled as smooth as glass with no balancer. I still wanna put a balancer on it but he won't let me.

if your supercharged and looking for a budget over drive dampaner pp makes a 7.5 inch crank but i still would not trust it.

Yours was missing a balancer too? I almost pissed my pants when I saw it and noticed how smooth the engine was idling. Shocked me honestly.

internaly ballanced motors will idle nice with out a dampaner, but the elastomer ring along with the mass of the pulley dampens harmonics passing threw the crank. not running one short term will have vary little effect but as the engine gets older the harmonics will start its damage.

btw most cheap dampaners have some sort of wabble to them, its when you see forward or aft movement/eroded elastomer ring.

I wouldn't cut corners if you are supercharged... I got a Ford 8 rib crank dampner when I did a GI Joe 8 rib conversion... and then even it separated... the crank separated from the rubber dampner - walked forward 3/4" and sheared off my belt on the track

Have since gone to an Innovators West - very quality piece

I've been thinking about doing some upgrades to my supercharged 2V and I found this thread.

Can I mix in an 8-rib balancer with my 6-rib belt and pulleys (stock) and be OK until I upgrade the rest of the pulleys? I was looking at the Innovators West product.

Are there any negative issues w/ running an overdrive balancer, since it will spin the alternator and water pump harder? I'm already spinning the motor to 6500 rpms.

As for the water pump if it's spinning faster than stock you run the risk of overheating your engine, which is counter intuitive because you'd think more water would be flowing through, but it's because you can get little air bubbles instead of continuous fluid from the water pump working too hard and air doesnt disperse heat nearly as well as the water

Close but no cigar. The reason it overheats is the fluid doesnt stay in the radiator long enough to disperse the heat.
