Coolant light?

My coolant light has come on a few times over the past 2 weeks. It doesnt come on everytime I start the car just kind of randomly. My coolant is not low, that was my first guess haha. Would this be the thermostat sticking? Any ideas? Car runs fine doesnt get over heated or anything.

the coolant level sensor is a float style sensor. Sometimes they get hung up.

Coolant is based on the sensor which I believe is in your coolant reservoir. How does the level look in there?

It could be a bad sensor, or you could have an air pocket. Has it been filled recently?

I've owned the car for a year and a few months and never messed with the coolant. The level is fine. I just checked it the other day. Is there a reason why this would just start happening after a year? It never happened before as long as I've owned the car.

I have had mine come on a couple of times do to low coolant and then stick. I'd fill the tank and it would still be on. For some reason the float gets stuck. As you are looking at the engine from the front of the car the float is on the drivers side underneath the cap. The two times mine has stuck on I took a rod and gently wiggled it around the float. It freed the float and everything was normal. I tried that first because according to my maintenance manual replacing that float is a real pain.

By the way, I have absolutely no idea why the float stuck but its been a year and its not happened again.

You need to do a test on your coolant and see what mixture you have, color etc. those floats are very sensitive. take the 2 screws off it and dump out your fluid in your resorvoir so you can inspect the rod and float. Specific gravity of the coolant can effect the Float, some will disagree, but it does.

Ok I'll check the coolant. If I turn the car on and the light comes on, I can shut the car off and restart it and the light will go off and not come on for a day or so. It's just completely random. I will check the coolant like I said though, the level is fine. Maybe I'll just drain the coolant and put new in since I havent done so since owning the car. Is there a write up on how to change the coolant? I assume its pretty easy, but I dont know as I have never done it.

Mine is always on. So I just unplugged the sensor and check the level everyday.

Been doing a little research. From what I gather, to change the coolant and flush the system, I need to drain the old coolant, and place a hose with running water into the radiater filler, then start the car and let it warm up with water running through the system from a hose. After the car is warm, I need to fill back up with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Sound right?
