Why u mad man. A mini spool is a good cost effective way to have a true posi in the back. Mini spools slow you to keep your c clips. It also is easy to install since there is no need to re shim your rear end

that wouln't work with your factory carrier so after you add a new carrier/etc to the bill then it's not really worth it.

I'd skip a 28 spool - not great for the street and yet not heavy enough for the track?

Motive Gear MS88-31 - Motive Gear Mini Spools - Overview - SummitRacing.com

this is the spool made for our cars and its 31 spline. but before ordering open your diff cause later new edge mustangs had closed carriers. i know my 2000 had an open carrier so it could be used. i had one in my 93 and it was great for the track but crap on the street.

although I can't seem to find a straight answer on the motive gear mini spool. the one the o/p linked to (along with most others) clearly states that an "open" carrier is required for installing the mini spool (along with most drop in e-z lockers)

what they are refering to when they say "open" carrier is a non trac-lock/non posi/etc carrier (ie. "one wheel peel").

since all GT's come with trac-lock, thats why I made the comment I did.

I see that link you posted would probably be a better route, I thought a new diff would just consist or taking the carrier caps off and unbolting the ring gear...am I missing something?

Okay the way it was said just confused me, so like the 7.5 rear ends would be an open carrier and our 8.8s would be a closed carrier.

I thought you were saying I would need a new rearend so disregard my previous post

not really, you'd at least have to check the gears due to having taken every thing appart & installed the new carrier.

a much better & easier way to go is just freshen up the carrier you already have with new clutches or just do a 31 spine swap.

it not really open & closed, it's open or trac-lock.

a mini spool can be run in the older diffs, i belive ford changed the diff after 01. i would not drive a car with a spool in the back on the streets. i just like mini spools over full spools cause you dont have to run c clip eliminators. im not 100% sure on the year ford changed out the diff, but the older style is what alot of companys base after market guts off of. i had a buddy that ran a power trax locker in the back, but it was junk.

Just weld your spider gears together. Cheaper and easier. I did this on my car/motor. Been holding strong. 600rwhp on spray. 437rwhp on motor and dumps on slicks at the track and DRs on the street.. 28 spline BTW.

pretty much.

bottom ine with them is they are more geared for 4x4's than cars.

make life easy on yourself & just stick with a trac-lock till the car needs something better.

The car is driven on the street about 2k miles a year, do you get any hopping around turns? If not and the axles will hold up ill do that, I don't plan on seeing over 400 with this car so yeah
