Going to the track again...:)

So it'll be the second time i've ever been. Last time was about 8 months ago and my was 14.069 at 100(i think, actual time is next to my avi). Anyways i've an x pipe and a TB since then, also last time i went i had some very bald tires that were like 235's? Now i have 285 sumis with pretty much full tread on them, which I've heard are still shitty but better than what i had.

Should i expect any better times? The best 60' i could cut was a 2.1, so hopefully i can do a little better this time.

The only thing is, last time I went i messed up my 3rd gear synchro, and i still haven't fixed it. But I will be getting a new tranny in less than a month which is why I am not too worried about messing anything up further. I'm usually able to get it in 3rd if i let the rpm's drop and have only slammed in (pushing it through the grinding) about 3 times since its been messed up. I'm assuming that it is a bad thing to do, but what is the worst that could happen? And should i slam it in, or wait until it'll let me in?

Also if there's any other tips you guys have, they'd be much appreciated, thanks!!

Lol worst thing that could happen would be breaking your syncro and transmission. If you have to wait till it slides in your track times are going to be worse then last time. Also if you really tear up something and your tranny leaks out on the track there may be a clean up fee.

I wouldn't risk breaking the tranny, unless you can pay for a new one now. And SSG Pate is right, there could be track cleaning fee's.

We have snow on the ground.

Eight months ago was May. The cooler tempatures should give you a little more power and the cooler tempatures should make the tires spin more. It's going to be hard to get a good time with a bad third gear so don't worry about it. Instead, practice on your 60 foot.

I did the same thing, don't worry about it, unless you slam it in right away the only thing at risk is the shift fork so be careful.

I drove my car for over a year without a third gear synchro, and I actually tore into it last weekend and rebuilt it. It grinded hundreds of times before I fixed it, and nothing at all was messed up, it just wore out the lining of the blocker ring.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah i really don't feel like paying track fees haha. I guess i'll just work on my 60 foot times and not worry to much about the shifting. Once i get the tranny and break in the new clutch ill go back. Will a mow shifter improve times by much? i have one waiting to go on the new tranny.

Edit: Oh and sdickinson, are you saying that you slammed it a lot, through the grinding? And yeah i've grinded it a bunch but usually i just wait for the rpms to drop and it'll let me in. It's very annoying haha

I think your trap will pick up 2mph or so with the x pipe and cool weather. Since the 3rd gear synchronize is messed up just powershift the fuck put of it. When my 3rd gear synchro went, if I powershifted it wouldn't grind. Any other time it would.

I say if its cold, do a burnout get those tires somewhat warm and slip the clutch around 2500rpm

your going to have to slam threw it if you wanna go fast. but what usually happens is you try to push threw it and its unforgiving not letting you in the gear.

Isn't power shifting bad? I'm not too worried about hurting the clutch or tranny, cause those will be replaced, but i don't wanna completely fuck it up to wear it's not drivable.

I wouldn't expect a better time unless you are going to slam it in 3rd, I cut a 1.91 60 on my Sumi's but they do suck for traction so don't be upset it they just spin.

No I never slammed it in, I always let the rpm's drop before I went in but alot of times didn't wait long enough and it grinded. But what I was saying is that if you do try to slam it and mess up and it won't let you in gear, you have a pretty high chance of breaking the shift fork inside the tranny. If that broke inside, you wouldn't be able to drive it at all.

If you want a good ET bang gears. Im not really one to talk because my times arent great. I wanted to get a lower ET like 12.3-12.4 and then powershift just because I wanted to save the powershifting for a run that could put me in the 11's. But after that 12.35 track got slick.

When I was NA I used to powershift it all the time. I ran a best of 13.40 @ 104mph. Which isnt bad for 4.10's, exhaust and crappy old NT555Rs (2.0 60')

Dont expect to get good times shifting like a pussy. lol

Alright, so I'll just be working on my 60 foot time if I do go. I'm hoping i can do better than a 2.1 cause the ones i used the first time were sumi's but they were extremely bald, and 235's like i stated. Definitely won't be slamming 3rd. Still curious about the no grinding thing when power shifting though

And haha yeah I'm not expecting good times anymore, but hopefully in about a month or 2 I'll be going back with a fully functional car and dip into the 13's

Dude just powershift it. Your replacing the tranny in a month, just beat the fuck out of that one. Guarantee it wont break where you wont be able to drive it. Worst case is 3rd gear is blown. So no 3rd gear for a month. But even that I doubt it.

My 3rd gear sycnhro went, and I beat the fuck out of it. It was warranteed and I was waiting for the shop to get a transmission in for me. So I had it like that for a few weeks. Made like 15 passes at the track, all powershifting into 3rd, on the street I would powershift 3rd. I tried to completley kill 3rd gear but I couldnt. Everytime I powershifted it wouldnt grind.

I might give in to trying it. Any idea why it doesn't grind when you power shift it??

you guys should be ashamed of your selves trying to get the o/p to make his problems worse.

don't even think of going to the track till the trans is fixed & you get some more practice shifting so you minimize your chances of breaking the trans again.

Reason I said go for it is because hell have a new transmission in a month. Might as well practice on the broken one vs trying to practice on the new one and breaking that too. Just my opinion. But Ive also had 3 transmissions in my car

I understood your reasoning, but the racetrack isn't somewhere to play shifting games/etc.

let's just say he he tries to jam the broken trans into gear & it locks up when it comes appart, or worse yet it splits wide open & dumps 3 qts of tranny fliud right under the back tires?

both cases a person on their second trip to the track is crashing, period, mabie into the car in the other lane, mabie the wall, either way not good.

not trying to be a dick, but ask some of the more experianced track guys & they'l tell you the same.

pushing past a bad syncro 90% of the time will cause damage to the shift fork. broken fork can render a car useless cause when it goes you loose 3-4 and often times your shifter pretty much goes to crap where you cant use any gears. i have torn up quite a few t-5's and t-45's in the past due to loosing the pads on the shift fork from pushing past a grinding gear

Thanks for the input, i decided that i'm just really gonna work on my 60 foot times and just wait until it lets me in 3rd, it doesn't take too long, but I'm not expecting anything faster than 14s haha. Hell, I might even just go straight to fourth? Probably not though.
