AEM Releases the Dyno-Shaft On-Vehicle Dynamometer System - Part 2Eliminate Guesswork - Know for sure if slower times are due to a loss of power, vehicle set up or driver error. Engine tuning - Stop trying to approximate real world test conditions and start testing in the real world! Finally you can test with actual intake air conditions, actual vehicle loading and the hundred other things that make a real vehicle behave very different than it does when on a dyno. Chassis Set Up - Know when the tires will break loose. Ideal for optimizing drag launches and determining the longitudinal forces your tires can handle in road racing. Torque Converter and Clutch development - Finally know what your Torque converter or clutch is doing while you are making a pass! Dyno It All - The Dyno-Shaft accurately reads in all conditions including steady state, uphill or downhill, even while coasting down! ![]() AEM DYNO-SHAFT SPORTSMAN FEATURES: • Measures Torque and RPM at the driveline to deliver real Horsepower and Torque numbers • Does not skew readings like accelerometer-based units • Eliminates guesswork when troubleshooting or making changes at the track • Laboratory-grade strain gauge requires no slip rings or batteries and is maintenance free • Create dyno charts which can be saved, printed, or shared electronically (requires AQ-1 Data Logger) • Sportsman slip yoke is manufactured from ductile cast iron • Sportsman slip yoke splines are manufactured from a broaching process that produces industry-leading mating fit parts • Sportsman slip yoke is temperature compensated and individually calibrated for load through a multi-point process • Can be used with the AEM AQ-1 data logger, AEM Series 2 EMS, and some third party CAN-enabled engine management systems, data loggers and displays (contact AEM Technical Support or Sales Dept at (310) 484-2322 or contact your direct vendor to confirm whether your CAN-enabled device can read the Dyno-Shaft datastream) |

And at a price of 1160. This would be great for the true sportsman of a team or armature racers looking to save a buck on dyno readings. Kind of cool.

I read an article in some magazine a few years back about this idea that some kid thought up and patented. I wonder if this is the end product of that?
Looks pretty damn cool!

there a video or some thing of this thing working? Why would the average guy need this? or is it more aimed at race teams? Do i need to get a different driveshaft? How much power can this thing handle before it breaks?

I would imagine it would be targeted to teams or hardcore enthusiasts. After all, it's just a data logger. You still need the capability to change/modify things based on that data. Which is why most people would just go to a dyno shop once or twice and get it dialed in.
But it definitely is a sweet idea.

If you had one of these, or even one of the accelerometer based tools they decry (like my old G-Tech Pro), there is no need to go up on the rollers unless you want to get a baseline or updated numbers. A dynamometer is just another tool to measure power--it has nothing to do with changing or modifying a tune...

So can you hook this up to a guage and it'll show you your power your making all the time? Like instead of showing you your boost it shows you your power?

Yup, it goes inline with the driveshaft, and measures transmitted torque and shaft RPM, then calculates HP. Apparently it has a CAN bus output...
