I have some tuning questions....

So, I asked this on another forum (i know, shame on me) and got virtually 0 responses....

Ok, so I tried a search, and didnt really find much, and I kinda wanted to feel special with my own thread...so here goes.

With my current set-up (in sig), I have been told that it would be a wise choice to get tuned. Now...my question is....should I get a dyno tune, or just order a hand held tuner from American Muscle w/ the preloaded tunes on it? Do the handhelds adjust a/f ratios, or is that a dyno only thing?

I can get dynoed and have an SCT Xcal II tuner for $575, or just get the same tuner from AM for like $400ish w/ the 3 tunes on it.

Please help...

You would get a little more power with just the canned tunes on a tuner. I wouldn't waste the money on a dynot tune just yet. I'd save it for when you get more mods done.

Plus if you have the tuner getting the Dyno tune would be less b/c you already have the tuner.

One thing to keep in mind though. Either way you go your getting a hand held tuner. If you get the dyno tune you'll get to see your HP numbers though.

Just my .02

with your mods you really dont need a tune yet. but you'll of course will get more power if you get a hand held tuner and be able to adjust things, so its not a bad investment. i'd say get some gears and/or a short shifter.

Like he said, you really don't need a dyno tune with what you have modded so far. The basic tunes that come with the handhelds will work great. But some people would rather spend the extra money while they're spending money and throw it on a dyno to squeeze every little hp they can and have a dyno sheet. Pretty much it's personal preference at this stage.

a tuner always helps, and will always add hp. that is a decision that is all up to you. get an sct if you want a tune that is made for you mods and your car. a diablo is good but you will have to go and modify parameters to get good power out of it. i am thinking about selling mine and going with a sniper set up.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I've made up my mind that when I do tune it, it will be a dyno tune. May as well go the whole 9 yards w/ it, that way I make sure my a/f is on key all the way thru WOT.

I'm pretty much done w/ performance mods the way it sets, the only other thing I may do is some 3.73's. I have an auto so no short shifter, and I may do a shift kit w/ tranny cooler. I just havent made up my mind if I want to go that far w/ this car.

Next on my list is some visual mods such as wheels, hood, front bumper, suspension, and window tint.

with a 75mm TB, plenum/ CAI and longubes i'd put it on a dyno. you'll get better results specific to your car and you'll have the tuner afterwards anyways so your next dynotune will be a lot cheaper in case you decide to throw something else on it later on. like oh.. say a 100shot or a t trim? =)

You may want to consider 4.10s instead of 3.73s with an automatic especially if you don't plan to go FI. Autos need the taller gear ecause they lose more power getting it to the wheels.

Lol..I'd love to throw on a Novi, but I'm a broke college student so it just wont happen.....at least for a year.

neckbonekat - I thought about 4.10's, but this is my daily driver and I'm just not sure I want to go w/ that much gear. I wasnt going to do gears at all until a kid I know beat me in his 99 GT b/c he has 3.73's. If I got 3.73's I would walk him, and thats my only concern lol.

if you go with 4.10s you will need some type of tune because ford can't do a 410 recal, i've got 410s in my 5sp and love them and i still get 21 mpg on the high way

All he needs is a hand held tuner to recalbrate for the gears.
