Engine "ticking noise" video linked

I've been lurking around this forum and various other sites for a few years now and have found tons of helpful and useful information that has helped me to fix and do a lot of little things with my stang but this one has me at a loss. I'm pretty much lost when it comes to engine repair so I'm finally breaking down and creating an account.

My mustang started ticking about 1 month ago. This is the noise it makes. This video is with the car warmed up. When the engine is cold it doesn't start ticking till around 2000 RPM. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't listen to the video because of my location in a library, but it may very well be a lifter that is collapsing. If it only does it when it warms up then you may be loosing oil pressure as the oil thins out and causing the lifter to collapse. Do you have an oil pressure gauage? If so what does it read when the car is warm?

Its holding oil pressure, its not bottom end. My guess is either timing chain guides are worn, or its a lifter.

My initial thought was a lifter/lash adjuster but from what I've read it would be happening even when the engine is cold too. The oil pressure thing makes sense but the oil pressure gauge is reading fine so I'm kind of at a loss. Someone also suggested timing chain tensioner so I'm gonna check that out. I'm just praying its not a spun bearing or a pushrod.

Modular engine means no pushrods... the cams are right on top of the valves, so no pushrod is needed to open/close them.

I hope he meant connecting rod but i doubt its a spun rod just bc i dont see how it could even run for a month and if it was a spun rod rpms would be held down and wicked vibration from the rotating assembly being off balance but just put a boss 302 in it and call it a done deal lol

It'll run with a spun rod bearing. It will just use oil. It'll run forever if you keep oil in it..

yea ive run cars for literally months on end and sometimes even abused em with spun bearings. it gets worse little by little but it'll def run for a long time if its oiled. but good news is, theres always a 5.4l block waiting for a good home in a mustang

not a spun bearing.... I have heard this a ton of times and I have even had this same issue. It's in the heads. Your not getting enough oil up to the top of the engine and the lifters are collapsing. I have had luck on getting rid of the issue with a simple oil change.

If you problem sound like it is a marble on top of the engine, then its a top end issue. If it sound like a slap, then it is a rod.

I would suggest doing an oil change first and then go from there. Just so you know, the Oil pressure gauge in the dash is basically for reference. You need an actual pressure gauge to know for sure.

my engine makes the exact sound when it's cold, when its warmed up and has some oil flowing through it the sound stops almost completely, i also have a 65% loss of compression on a leak-down test in cylinder 3, and nothing on a static compression test, i've had a few people suggest it might be a problem with the piston ring, best of luck i'm pulling my motor apart on tuesday.
