CLUTCHES

Can anyone help me answer a question about clutches? I called up my performance shop back home in Michigan whom I usually go to and they are usually good at tech questions, however I called a transmission shop in Louisiana because I am stationed here and they stated that if I upgrade or change my OEM clutch to a aftermarket performance clutch (Mcleod Clutches) I could possibly later down the line ruin my differential or transmission. Is that true? If anyone can help me with this matter, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Ok, thanks! I was getting confused when that guy told me that it'll ruin my drive train and transmission.

There's only a handful of places here that I'd actually trust (any shop, not just transmission). If you want to talk to people who know their stuff call Stang-Hi Performance or Total Performance Solutions.

They probably mean that if you "over clutch" you induce too much shock into the rest of the drivetrain, which over time can cause damage. This is talking pretty hefty over clutching of course and assuming that one has STICKY tires, but there is SOME truth to what they are saying. However, a simple upgrade to a cobra clutch or a center force DF is not likely to cause any damage.

I have also heard they are overpriced, but I think Stang-Hi and TPS are the only ones in the BR/Gonzales/Prairieville area. I don't know of any near NOLA. Wish I could help

Labor for a clutch around me is $250-$300. Shop I use charges $250 for installing a clutch and resurfacing the flywheel.

This is a cobra clutch from UPR. Offer $10-$20 less and they will accept the offer. 01-04 MUSTANG VALEO FMS KING COBRA CLUTCH KIT 11" | eBay

Here is Valeo aluminim clutch same company that makes the Cobra clutch: Valeo Aluminum Flywheel (8-Bolt Pattern): 1996-04 4.6L Ford Mustang Cobra/SVT | eBay You'll need a 6 bolt one, but couldn't find it at the moment.

Here is a Spec Aluminum Flywheel: Spec Aluminum Flywheel 6 Bolt 2001-2004 Ford Mustang GT | eBay

Looks like you can get a good clutch and aluminum flywheel for $600.

What I don't get is that there is a 6 and 8 bolt pattern. But which one is really for the Mach 1? Because its got a GT body, but it has a Cobra motor without the supercharger.

I believe that all Mach 1s with 5-speeds had 8 bolt cranks and autos had 6-bolt cranks.

This is correct- 5spd machs have a forged crank (8 bolt) and autos have a cast crank (6 bolt)

Ok, I got confused when it came to bolt patterns. I surely didn't want to buy the wrong one and send it back and wait for the right one to come in. My performance shop uses McLeod Clutch kits anyone of you have heard of it or know how well it is? Seeing the fact that Cobra clutches are hard to come by?

This, but it also matters how you drive. The clutch itself wont break anything, but it will allow you to allow more forces through the drivetrain which can possibly cause damage.

Cobra clutches are not hard to come by. I posted an ebay link above to the one UPR carries. Mcleod are good clutches, but i believe they are a bit more than a cobra clutch. If you are not looking for more than 500rwhp the cobra clutch will be perfect.

Well, I plan to make 500-600bhp in the near future, but a little bit at a time. I saw the cobra clutch and it is very reasonably priced.
