need help diagnosing a noise

My car is starting to make a really terrible noise. It sounds like rough metal grinding against metal, spinning around. The best way I can describe it it, you know those toy cars you pull back until the wheels get wound up, then you let them go? That's what it sounds like.

A lot like this:

It only makes this noise when I'm at about 40+ mph, and I put it in neutral (manual, 5 spd.), like when I'm coming to a stop. It does not make the noise when in gear, either under load or coasting, and when I put it in neutral, it actually takes about a second before it starts.

Pushing the clutch in does nothing to stop the noise.

Also, gears are getting hard to get into.

I'd say this all started to happen "recently," within a few hundred miles, but since it's winter and I don't drive the car much I can't give a definite timeframe.

So what do you think? Clutch? TOB? Trans?

Sounds like your trans is toast. Replace your clutch, tob, and pilot bearings while your at it.

i have had that noise before and it can come from a few things. one would be a bad pilot bushing. also if a tob is toast it can make all kinds of noise. my most recent and less likely is your input shaft has to much play in it and needs to be re-shimmed.
