Axles

Thinking about 28 spline forged axles, for those of you who have done this is 28 Spline forged suffiecient for a street car. Dont want to upgrade the whole thing if its not needed, as i have other projects taking off to.

"Street car" doesn't tell us much. What mods (current and planned), how much power do you expect to be putting to the ground?

You need 31 splines. Moser, Strange, Superior are good. I have Moser. One local guy was running Superior's for 10 years and just snapped one at the track this summer. Car was making right around 500rwhp.

Then I would upgrade, or just wait 'til one breaks and then upgrade to a 31-spline setup...

Auto is a bit more forgiving than a stick, but at your power level I would definitely go 31 spline.

i'd throw the 28's in and wouldn't worry IMO. auto is way easier on the rear than the 5spd...and you won't ever hook good enough on the street to break an axle anyway.

I agree with the above posts. You're running too much horsepower for a 28 spline differential. I've read that Explorer differentials with hardened 31 spline axles holds up well. That's what I went with.

+1 to needing a 31 spline setup with that power. I'd wait until the stock one breaks, you'd be surprised at the abuse a stock rear can take. Mine took plenty of abuse on the street and strip. But 4-5k rpm launches on slicks finally broke it. I went with a 31spline diff from a newer stang, added the carbon clutches (easy mod) and moser axles for just a few hundred bucks.
