17X8 or 17X9

Hey guys I'm still trying to find the right rims, and I'm thinking of just keeping the tires I already have. I need to know how can I tell if I have 17X8's or 17X9"s or does it really matter when ordering rims. Still a newbie as you can see, but I'm trying lol.....thanks fellas

Thanks alot I appreciate it, you guys still have 17"s or did you go bigger? I wanted to go bigger but after reading many of the posts I think I'd be better off sticking with the 17"s and just getting the lowering springs. What do you think?
