03 Mustang GT TURBO!!!!

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forum scene. I have a 2003 Mustang GT. Cold Air, H-Pipe, and Magnaflow Mag packs on my car. The next purchase I was thinking about making was a Single Turbo for my car. My friend assures me that he can perform all of the labor, and reccomends I should push around 20lbs.

First I was wondering If I would be able to push 20lbs with stock internals.

Second my friend assures me that he can find a turbo for me, but I cant find anyone online that has a Tubo GT. Everyone has Twins.

Third any estimates of what kind of numbers I should be putting down.

Finally With the price of the turbo and the parts needed, and his labor. My friend is estimating that the whole thing should be around $2500 or $3000 to complete. Is it worth it? or are other mods more beneficial for the money?

Welcome to MM.

You can not push 20lbs on a stock block. More like 9-10 lbs. With a turbo I would guess that would put you over 400 rwhp with a good tune.

I know turbos aren't cheap by anymeans. A cheap supercharger kit for these cars will run you ever 3,000. I'll look up some stuff on turbo pricing, but you'll be over your 3,000 bucks.

I am no forced induction expert by any means but you might as well put a grenade on top of your engine trying to run 20 psi with stock bottom end. Look more 8-10 psi for a stock bottom. Supercharging would probably be a better option for you. Its cheaper, less complicated and usually more useable on a sreet car.

Yeah... the 20lbs was just a number that he had thrown out. He has a fully built Evo that puts down like 650. He said that he was going to try and find me a used turbo, a large one, not sure what kind.

Im assuming that he is gonna try and get me one of the old trubos off his evo.

i say anyone who says you should push a certain amount of boost on a stock motor doesnt really know about our cars and i doubt will be able to install a turbo kit correctly, also you better have deep pockets cause the shit aint cheap. You need about 7k for everything, and if you are planning on letting him fab one up on your car prepare to have your car down for a couple of months. I am sure he built a bad evo but they already have turbos and its not that hard to just bolt a bigger turbo on there.

I agree with White! dont let him touch your car! he maybe one of your best friends, but EVOs are way different than mustangs! And do alot of research before you do anything!

be sure the people that touch your car knows what they are doing. every motor is different, you have to know the strengths and weaknesses of what you are working on. just from the little bit you said, sounds like he needs to do a little more homework!

Ok .. 1st off .. we need a newbie section .. I know we were all newbs but this is getting old .. this way they can make 10 posts in that section before posting in this section .. and they'll know about 5 percent of people actually get a turbo, or any FI of that matter .. I know me and my buddy have had blowers in our garages for over 6 months now and have yet to throw them on .. anyway .. that asise .. with a pretty small turbo . .and about 7 psi on a stock block . you can push about 400-425 rwhp .. just to put your question into perspective .. its not about the boost and whats a safe boost number .. its about what are you actually producing and how harmful is it to your stock components ... if you really want a turbo .. and you want to do it yourself .. and you want to spend 3 grand .. get a vortech .. its basically a belt driven turbo .. and will give you what you want and with alot less headaches !!! ...

I wouldnt let your friend come near my car.. and that is no offense to him.. Its just there is such a HUGE difference between and evo motor and a mustang engine. You could probably fab up a turbo setup but i wouldnt recommend it. Our motors are touchy in some aspects and a gehtto rigged turbo won't perform on our cars like it would on a import. Also its not going to matter how much boost or anything you are trying to push without a good dyno tune. 20 pounds was a pretty CRAZY # for him to put out.
Do yourself a favor and spend the extra time and money to do the setup correctly. There is TONS of FI kits for our cars and if you have your heart set on turbos then i would do the twins.. there is a reason everyone else is running them. I hope this helps some.

Thats the best thing you can do.

If you come across anything you can't find an answer to just ask us, I'm sure some one here would know.

12.00 sec. flat... with a trap speed of 118mph... He dynoed at 380 on a stock evo clutch and trubo..

he did some work and got number of 450, prob hittin 11.2 sec. he said.

He tore everything down again, got a new clutch, block, the works, with a giant turbo, Hes suppose to dyno around 650, and hit low 10s

I think... that is the brief on him and his ride

His car is always in an out of the shop for a while... a lot of cosmetic (paint) and performance work

I agree with what MeZ said. If your looking for a centrifugal type blower, and not looking to spend an ass load... get a vortech or a novi 2000 centrifugal supercharger.

But, if you are heartset on going turbo, then def get the twin turbo kit... which will cost an ass load, but if you get it done right, it will cost a lot less than buying and installing a whole new motor!

agree. there is more to a turbo kit than a turbo. theres the exhaust, fuel, tuning, k member and other suspension mods.
