TIME HAS COME!!! NEW HEADS AND CAMS...INPUT PLEASE!

Okay i have finally decided to just go ahead and spend the money. I am looking at getting the Patriot Stage III heads and Comp Cams. I can't decide on the cams though. I am looking for low end TQ and launching quickly and of course I want the rough idle. I was thinking of using Comp XE274H, XE270AH or even the XE278AH. What do yall think? I am looking to put a KB on next year and forged internals, any input would be appreciated. I doubt I will use it for the track, the new one won't be open here for awhile. I want a nice launch with a MEAN SOUND, Top End speed is not my first priority. New shorty headers will be going along with the install and O/R H pipe. Also other than new timing gears, is there anything else I will need? other than lube and hardware, and do I have to upgrade my injectors? I am running the stock ones now. Thanks for any input.

personnal opinion is stay away from patriot heads, look into VT stage 2 heads, or modularpowerhouse stage 2.5 heads. I have the VT stage 2 heads and stage 2 n/a cams and i love them. Just with that combination, lower compression, stroker motor which actually makes you lose hp i made 312rwhp

Thanks for the info, I have heard that before about the Pats, but I haven't found anyone say as to why? I haven't seen or heard anything bad specificly about them. The company has been around for about 30 years, but i know they are new to modulars.

BTW...WASN'T THAT YOU AND YOUR CAR IN THE LAST ISSUE OF MM&FF... NICE JOB BRO' SWEET RUN!!!!!! I BOW TO U!!!

Yeah that was him and thanks for bringing it up again. That's all we hear about is "I was in MM&FF, blah blah blah."

Yep sure is...

Do like White99stang said...

Go with a set of VT heads or a set of Modular Powerhouse 2.5 Heads...

Then go with a set of cams that fit what you are planning to do to the car in the future...IE Blower, Turbo, Nitrous, N/A...

i 4th the motion for VT stage 2 heads and VT cams for whatever setup you are looking to run. they are the best in the market right now! i wish i would have waited to get these. instead i got some sean hyland crap heads and cams. they aren't that bad, but i bet i would have made more power with the VT combo.

I have a buddy who put patriot heads in his 98, and after he did, all kinds a shit broke (I don't know all the details, sorry). He's getting a new motor soon. and I have read all over the place that VT straight up makes the best heads. I know that you've had your heart set on the pats, but IMHO, I would really go for the VT's cuz they are the best. People simply don't have problems with you... and I know that they run REALLY well with comp cams.

on the cams, if you want low end torque, your going to have to go with a smaller cam, i.e. the 270 or the 274. I think the 278 will put the power higher in the powerband than you are looking for. However, if you go with a screw-type supercharger, then that will make up for the low end torque that you might not get from the cams, so you will probably have a beautifully flat power curve!

I would do this:
VT stage 2 heads
Comp XE274H cams
KB 2.1 9psi supercharger

the 278 cams will make the valve hit the stock piston. the 270 cams will work but you better make sure they are degreed right. i would go with the vt stage 2 cams. they make great hp up high and dont loose any tq down low.

no stage 2 cams aren't too aggressive, mine was a DD for over 2 years with them.

I know a guy with a 5 axis CNC head porting machine who knows his business and also speaks very lowly of patriot performance and many other companies that port heads with a large stepping machine.

He will port a set of customer supplied 2V heads for $600.00 and they'll be cut 1mm over for oversized valves. if you need disassembly, cleaning, inspection, a valve job, valves, seals, springs, retainers, locks, and assembly, thats additional. He's also working on perfecting the software for the 3V newer motors and 4V cobra heads.

If interested shoot me a PM and i'll put you in contact with him.

there is nothing wrong with patriot heads. if they are what you have been looking to buy, then go for it. patriot cams arent all that great, you will want to go ahead and change them to something else. if you are planning on a poweradder, then a set of custom grind vt cams are the way to go.

Wouldn't it be smarter to buy the cams after the SC? Are there different cams for N/A cars and SC cars?
