Removing Brake Calipers

Ok. I don't have $800 for the Cobra Big Brake rotor upgrade yet but my rear brakes are down to nothing so I decided today to take a set of rear brake pads for 2001 mustangs I got several months ago and put them in in the mean time...I have a 15mm socket set, everything I needed to get all the bolts off including the banjo bolts and both sets of bolts connecting the caliper to the caliper bracket....But that damn thing would NOT come off!! All I could tell was that I was able to slide the brake caliper up and down the rotor but that piston or whatever it is in the middle of the caliper was NOT letting go of the rotor. Finally instead of ruining the brake setup and having to leave the car in the garage, I put all the bolts back on and said "forget it". Please, tell me what I have to do to get that caliper off..hopefully its not some insane tool from Ford I need to compress that thing to get the caliper off. Eventually when I get the money, it wouldnt be an issue because I'd be taking the rotor, caliper and brake lines off and junking them but I NEED rear brakes NOW...Please help.

I removed the 15mm bolts...that thing was NOT coming off, that step-o-gram has gotta be missing something, unless youre supposed to use an f*ing hammer and wack the shit out of it...nevertheless, that caliper casing was NOT coming off with the complete removal of those bolts.[/quote]

you could do what i did.

stick a flat head screw driver in the hole on top of the caliper..

just make sure not to hit the pistons inside.

leverage ftw.

use a 13mm open end wrench and slide yuour foot up in there and give it a nice little kick...

or use a hammer, preffereably a rubber mallet so it wont cause metal on metal fuck ups...

I had to do that as well. Make sure you get a pair of vice grips to secure the inner part of that casing around the cailper retaining bolt. Youll see what I mean when the bolt just stays where it is once you break it loose
