My engine just took a dump!


I need some help.

I went to the local car wash to try and shine up the new wheels for some nice photos. Went for a cruise to find a nice spot for pics. Half way there, less than a 3 mile drive, the car started detonating and white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. I killed the engine and popped the hood to see if the radiator had decided to give up on me again. Nope, nothing out of the ordinary under there. Let it sit for a while and headed home. Things were fine for the first mile or so. Then I started noticing a TON of white smoke coming from the back. Smelled like radiator fluid too. I stopped waiting to turn left into a gas station and the car just died on me. After about 10 secs of "dieseling". I popped the hood again and nothing strange. The temp gauge never went over 180*... After a few minutes I opened the radiator cap, slowly, and nothing happened. went to sit in the drivers seat and before I got out of site of the cap, it burped! There was a ton of air in there and it all came out at the same time... I waited a few more minutes, put the cap back on shut the hood and headed home. On the drive home things were o.k. for the first half mile or so. Then she started detonating heavily in the lower rpm's. I would push the gas pedal in further and it would stop, then on engine deceleration the white smoke would start billowing out. I got to the house and she just stuttered a few times and died on me...

I just bought a full tank of gas from an Exxon station. So I don't think it's bad gas, unless someone put something in my tank...

Any ideas? Please help me!

+1 sounds like a head gasket to me, it usually has white smoke at normal operating temperatures. It is caused by the head gasket shrinking and allowing coolant in the combustion chamber.

I though of that, but how? I never got over 3k rpm's and it ran without a problem yesterday when I got it out of the shop and cruised around for probably 45 minutes... Drove to and from work today and there weren't any problems.

Has it ever overheated? if so maybe the problem just got big enough to start causing problems...

that oil or antifreeze.... more than like antifreeze..... pull some plugs and see if they have a green tint. pull the dipstick and check for water. pull the antifreeze cap off and check for oil. if those don't tell you, pull the front 02's and check for a green tint. Do a compression check.

hmm.. well that sucks...

if the coolant levels ae ok and it's blowing white smoke ... you have a leak in one of your head gaskets or your intake manifold.

That's what I don't want to hear. It was all white smoke, and smelled heavily of engine coolant. I'll have to pull the plugs tomorrow since it's dark here, and I still have to work in the morning.

I hydroplaned and hit a curb two Fridays ago. That's why I got the new gas, cause it sat in the drive way for over 2 weeks. The engine ran fine to the shop, back home from the shop and when I was cruising around yesterday...

No engine work was done.

Sh!t man that sucks A$$. You don’t have a warranty. I think it is your head gaskets what’s sucks is you have to pull your top end off right?

Not sure... Never had to change a head gasket on my Mach... Hope I never do!

yeah he'd have to pull off the heads (valve covers, cams, intake manifold, water pump, headers, heads, timing cover and then line up TDC and all with the cams and crap... lol easier with pushrod engines because they only have one cam... and the cam is underneath the head instead of ontop... a lot of work but can be done)

if i was you I would be crying. Sh!t man if you have the $$$$ do the heads. Modulars don’t flow air good.

Off topic but what do 4v flow with performance heads? My friend and rival is building a 383 and his heads flow 278cc with a .550 lift I think

Good lord... I'm def not mechanically inclined. Wish I was. How can you tell of detonation? besides smoke I guess.
