engine noise

when i go down the drag strip i notice a noise coming from my motor which my old motor used to do also and its hard to describe but the best way i could discribe would be that it sounds like dropping really small rocks on cement. or something like that. anyone know what im talking about? it does it when i am at wot or even if im on the freeway in 5th at 3/4 throttle and i can hear it well then.

no it wasnt an exhaust leak i dont think...although ive got an exhaust leak now too since i put my upr xpipe on which is comeing from the drivers side where the manifold and midpipe meet. another thing that i notice about my motor is like my old motor when it was bad it would make a pitter-pattering bearingish noise when i accelerate normal and slightly hold the rpms in the 2.5k+rpm range but the old motor had to warm up a little before it would do it and this motor does it till its been warming up and driving for about 5 mins or less.

its confusing i know but it really bothers me since im no mechanic and im not really sure how to find out whats wrong. or if there even is anything wrong....all i know is that as soon as i get my udp's installed next weekend im gonna get a dyno tune from blood enterprises. maybe things will be better then.

it doesnt do it during idle. only while driving and you have to be at least 3/4 throttle. i dont have any way of takeing a sound clip atm. it doesnt get faster its kinda random beat and imagine haveing bits of sand in your motor.

Uhm, what's the oil level at? Just a guess but maybe it's lubricating itself and the noise is stopping because its lubricated... do you warm up your car for like a min or 2 or do you just go?

Are you sure it's from the motor and not something else?

check for any loose parts/bolts under the hood. Could be a vibration from engine. Otherwise, do you hear it more from the bottom, firewall, top???

What kind of fuel are you using? And from where? What mods do you have? Detonation can put holes in your in your pistons or cracks in your cylinder heads, it's from running low octane fuel or from running lean. It's a high pitched 'ting' sound...

it doesnt sound like tinging....i use regular cuz im not tuned for higher and i use chevron and 76 only. also i use injector cleaner every month or so.
Current Mods:
-K&N cai
-BBK 75mm TB
-BBK Plenum
-UPR catted x-pipe
-A/T Flowmaster cat-back
-Diablosport (out of box tune)
-FRPP 4.10s
-Motive bearings (rearend)
-Spec Aluminum Flywheel
-Steeda UDP's (Well they will be on next weekend)
-Ive got royal purple throughout the car

but its made the noises which are more of like ticking noises since before i had half of those mods.

From Chevron to 76... That's a shocker for that engine.

Some ticking is normal in these cars, sometimes the injectors will make that noise and is more noticeable when you have a wall or something next to you and the sound bounces off.

Also, try doing a motor flush. Be careful since you have a 99 and if it's high mileage, flush the engine with less time than recommended. That should help free up some crap/sludge inside. After you do the flush, make sure you use Restore (it really works) to re-coat and lubricate all parts and seals since the flush might dissolve a little too much on an older engine.

Now you described "rocks hitting the pavement". Is it more like a rhythm/steady noise or is it a variable ticking noise?

76 is pretty cheap I would think, Chevron is good, I only use Chervon and Sunoco.

76 is not a good gas, period. I won't get technical, but you can do a search and you will find out. It's like Walmart/Sams fuel. Don't do it.

Does the noise goes away anytime you hit the clutch?

You shouldn't run 87 octane- even on a stock tune. That's all I will say.

A ticking sound coming from your engine is a good sign of a rod bearing going bad.

How often do you change your oil? Do you do it yourself? Take it to get the oil changed and ask the mechanic to hold a strong magnet to the old oil as it pours out of the bottom of the car as they are draining it, or do it yourself if you change your own oil.

If there are metal bits in your oil, it's time for an engine rebuild. Don't drive it anymore!

I don't mean to scare you with all this, especially since it's probably your only car and hence your daily driver, but I would go do this immediately.
