Engine ticking noise

Alright I have developed this odd ticking sound, that is very specific. It only happens when the car is hot, between 1500-2500 rpms, its loudest under about 1/4 throttle, and it happens on acceleration and deceleration sometimes. I just changed the oil tonight and tried using the stock tune neither made any difference. My mods are 4.10 gears, udp, mac o/r x, magnapack cat-back, and a Diablo sport tuner. I`ll try to get a clip of the noise tomorrow. Thanks for the help in advance.

Don't throw away that oil yet!

Get a magnet and check the old oil for metal bits. If you find any, it's most likely a thrown rod bearing. I had the same ticking sound when one of my rod bearings went bad.

Exhaust leak is a big possibility.

I checked for any exhaust leaks shortly after it started and I did have one but we got it taken care of and the noise continued.

Just checked the oil for metal and thankfully there was not any in there, I did find a set of mechanics ears and on the passenger side bank you can hear it best on the second cylinder from the front...I dont know what fords cylinder order is sorry...so now i`m going to check the plug and make sure its not backing out, and i might just go ahead and replace them all while i`m in there. Thanks again for the quick responses. I`ll update after I get the plug out i`m headin out to start now.

Well I got all the plugs changed out and there is no change in the noise. I tried to start back out with the mechanics ears and it still sounds the loudest right around cylinder number 2, I can hear it under the intake in the block but its very faint. I am about to run to my house i`ll get a clip with my digital camera and post up a link for it asap.

Sorry its not a really good quality video but its good enough to hear the noise, I tried to do one from outside the car but the engine noise overloaded the speaker on my camera.

I'm inclining to believe that it's got nothing to do with your internals, although it sounds like a valve. I had the weirdest sound last weekend on the car and I thought it was the engine. Then I thought it was the throwout bearing, then I thought it was a valve. Hell I called AC and told him that I had blown my bottom! Just a nasty ticking and then a very hard vibration. I drove to Miami with the car like that, afraid that it would blow at any point. When I came back, I went to AC's house and I showed him a piece that was stuck in between the body and my left head. That piece was not supposed to be there and I don't know where the hell it came from, but that was the problem. AC pulled it out with a hook and the problem was gone.

Does it do it at higher RPM's? When accelerating or when you let go?

I didn't get much of it except once when dropping rpm at 1700-1500...

Rod bearing? Does it drive normal? Any smoke?

Its only at those lower rpms nothing in the higher range its on acceleration and sometimes it will hang around and still tick when i stick the clutch in, it drives completely normal and there is no smoke or anything out of the ordinary, i`ll have to get it back up on jack stands and make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary underneath the car tomorrow. I`ll also try to get a better sound clip of it.

Finally got it solved, its the injector on cyl 4, I found the tsb for it and started pulling the injector plugs one by one and that one made it all go away but thanks for the quick help.

thats the exact same noise my motor made when a rod bearing went bad in my car but as i drove it more and more after a few months it got worse and worse and i got on the freeway to go home and as i got off the freeway bam (not that there was a bam noise lol) my motor was obviously fucked and kept dying and running like shit and making terrible noises all of a sudden and then i just couldnt get it started anymore. sad experiense with the steed...cost me $3700 after everything since i had to get two swaps.

Thanks DC, bump for the night crowd I think it might be the valve lash adjusters, anybody here replaced those before...any tips would be appreciated.
